if u want only anti-virus then avira is the best because

1. it has the highest virus detection rates (see av-comparatives.org)

2. also the very good thing about avira is that in future if u uninstall avira, then no traces are left behind in the registry...this is extremely important because if traces r left behind in the registry then some anti-virus softwares may refuse to install

u can also use some anti-virus spray to remove viruses

Avira AntiVir also has one of the best heuristics engine; heuristics engine protect you from unknown malwares.

The point that if any point of time, you want to(If the A-V is so good, why would u?) uninstall,it will be a clean and complete one really appeals to me! Some A-V's give you hell(Kaspersky) when you decide to uninstall, believe me,i've been down that road!

(If the A-V is so good, why would u?) actually there is no guarantee that in the future also it will hold the first rank in virus detection

I'd much rather have Bit defender than Avira, it is one of the best most defensive antivirus programs in existance and in comparison to free Avira imho there is none!

Dear bumbluff,
If BD shows up no virus after a scan, and more importantly you have not noticed any change in the performance of your computer, you can be relatively re-assured that the pc is clean!

To be doubly sure run any of the online virus scanners :http://antivirus.about.com/od/freean...p/aaonline.htm

I've heard about false positives. I wish I really knew whether the viruses it's blocked really were viruses.
