loading antivirus on system that already has one
ok, I have a system that may have a virus. The problem is that it doesnt have an antivirus on it. I was under the impression that you couldnt load an antivirus on a system that already havd a virus on it, is this true?

also heres another problem, the system has ME on it.

Firstly, take a look at the sticky note "security help tools" at the top of this forum.Gives you a list of available on line scanners.
Secondly, you certainly can load an anti virus program onto your system.
So,can we assume that you have been running nakedly exposed to viruses?

If it is spyware, you will need a spyware app also, like AVG(free)which is both an antivirus and spyware application.
I believe the "sticky I referred to also lists good spyware apps also.

Run those before any defrags

Here is the download site for AVG. And another spyware app called spyware blaster.I use both on my two pc's

it wont run AVG, me is not supported. I got Avast and will be installing that. also I was gonna try superantispyware, it will work with me, but it says it requires 256megs of ram, this things only got 96 I think. dont know if it will work.

How about getting some more ram if possible. It is the most cost effective way to improve performance.
Try

www.crucial.com

And enter the computer specs.

Dear loki993,
You should at least be able to do an on-line scan. As Pedroguy said, comp.specs are useful to give you proper suggestions. Visit this site : http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Hi 96 Mb of Ram is just enough to run ME without any added programs.
Most Anti-virus and Spyware programs will not install.
More Ram if you can find some to match your system, is really your only choice.

I cant do an online scan, I have no internet connectivity. I only have broadband ethernet where im working on it and all it has it a modem for dial up.

actually its running 61 megs, dont know how but it is. the only antivirus I could get on it was Avast, its great but its a bit of a mem hog, it has really slowed the system down. the only anti spyware I can find that is supported is spybot, but the program will not run once I install the update. im in a bit of a pickle with this thing.

anybody know of a decent antispyware that will run on me?

ad aware will not work, I dont think malwarebytes supports me, superanti spyware does support it, but it requires 256 megs of ram to run.

no offense but such old computer with 96mb ram is not worth saving
you'd better buying a better machine where most antivirus programs will run

Dear loki993,
Windows Defender (WD)seems to be your best bet as it needs(?) only 60 mb space to run! Remember the caveat that no single anti spyware can detect all the spyware, but in your situation, this sees the only choice! I wish you luck and hope WD does the job!
