Non-stop data transfer going on - why?
Hi,

When I'm running on the wireless network I can see that my PC is constantly sending and receiving data. The wireless icon is not showing constant activity, but the activity window tells me it is sending and receiving all the time.

I have no data transfer limits with my ISP, but I'm concerned that something unwholesome might be going on in the background.

The PC is four years old and my kids (teenagers) have used it quite a bit, so who knows where they've been on the web. Keep up-to-date with AVG antivirus etc.

Any suggestions on how I can get some peace of mind about this, or how to discover whether there really is an issue?

Thanks,

Orangeduvet

You can install some traffic monitoring software, or firewall, to see what is sending and receiving data, and what amount of data. Btw, how do you judje that data is being sent and received? If your connection icon blinks sometimes - it's quite ok, i think, no reason to wory about...

Hi,

I have Windows firewall turned on. I know there is a lot of traffic because Wireless Network Connection Status tells me data is being sent and received all the time. For example, PC has been on for 2 hours and it's received 49,000 packets and sent 33,000, and the numbers are constantly increasing.

This happens all the time, even when I turn off all browsers etc. I've been aware of this for some weeks.

Thanks,

orangeduvet

Dear orangeduvet,
There is a very small utility called"Netmeter" and there is a free download from:http://www.hootech.com/NetMeter/

It will be helpful to really "know" the Uploads and the Downloads.

Hello orangeduvet and welcome to the Tech Guy Forum.

Which version of Windows, XP or Vista OR 2000 subtype, & service pack?
RIGHT click "my computer" for XP & 2000. Left click "properties".

Which software firewall? If not XP / Vista, please provide the brand, program name & version.

Which AVG; free or commercial; example 7.5, 8.xxx ? If AVG commercial, which product?

AVG Free no longer scans for rootkits. These are very difficult to detect.

Which anti malware [ antispyware, anti adware ] programs are installed?

Personally, I think you should click on the "report" link of your post and ask the moderator to move your thread to the malware removal forum, to be certain that the malware is gone.

Be sure to read

http://forums.techguy.org/malware-re...st-before.html

and http://forums.techguy.org/general-se...ing-forum.html

Do you use a router? If so, which brand, model & version? Look for a postage stamp sized sticker on the back or bottom of the router.

When did the problem begin?

I would suggest that it may be due to the presence of Trojans and Spyware, transacting data with their servers or may be your system is acting as a spam bot.
Use a good Antispyware.

For future reference:

1 of the limitations of XP's FW is that it doesn't notify you of which malware programs are trying to access the internet.

In your situation, IF you have malware on your computer, the malware will probably prevent you from installing a 3rd party firewall. There are multiple FW suggestions at
http://forums.techguy.org/general-se...elp-tools.html

I continue to believe that you need the help of the malware removal experts.
