Presumably you are running XP Pro SP2. Please verify or correct.
If you are sure that the problem began after the steps you described, I think the XP forum is a better place for this thread.
HOWEVER, this might work.
Open control panel [ start > settings > control panel ] OR start > control panel.
In the upper left, if it states, switch to classic view, left click.
Open folder options.
view tab.
select "show hidden files & folders".
uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"
uncheck "hide protected operating system . . "
Left click "yes"
Left click "ok".
Open "my computer".
Open C:
Open "windows"
Open "system32"
RIGHT click "gpedit.msc
Left click "run as administrator".
You may need to enter a password.
If that fails,
try these steps:
upon reboot, tap the F8 key, once a second, until the Windows startup menu appears. Use the up / down arrow keys to select [ highlight ] safe mode. Press "enter" on your keyboard.
Log in as the Administrator. You will need the password for the Administrator. When installing XP, the setup program usually does not ask you to create a pw for the Admin; in such cases the pw would be:
That is, nothing; blank, the empty set.
Click the green rectangle with arrow.
NOW try to change the policy.
It is possible for malware to cause such problems. Thus, I think you should click on the "report" link of your post and ask the moderator to move your thread to the malware removal forum, to be certain that the malware is gone. Alternatively, you might want to ask the moderator to close this thread, so that you can start a new thread at the malware removal forum. The reason for this suggestion is because the malware removal experts look for threads with no replies, as a means of identifying those who need assistance.
