Issue with virus updates across whole network
Firstly I hope this is the right place to post.

I have hit a weird issue where a computer would not allow AVG free to update. I thought it was computer specific as I noticed windows defender etc would not update - though access to the internet via browser was ok.

There are three other computers on the network and I installed avg free on each and each would not update, neither would any other malware software updates.

Could this be an issue with the network, perhaps a network wide virus or is it an issue with perhaps updates on virgin media cable broadband systems?

Thanks a lot

Yes
Yes
and
Yes.

But it is probably an issue with AVG. Why? Because AVG has been having problems, during the past 4+ wks with updates. There are multiple threads in this sub forum regarding AVG updates.

It is possible that AVG is preventing other antimalware from updating. Test by uninstalling AVG on 1 computer.

A network wide virus is possible if you have file or printer sharing enabled, or have used a CD or DVD or flash drive to transfer or install files.

It will be helpful for you, & us to know:
Version of Windows & Windows sub type [ Home, Ultimate ] & Service Pack.
AVG version; 7.5 or 8.xxx
Free or commercial; if commercial, which product?

It is possible to manually update AVG.

Check AVG's FAQs for information about their update issues and ow to manually update AVG.

Thanks

I appreciate AVG has been having issues however this would not affect other malware/spyware progs that also arent updating.

On the network there is 2 x xp home computers one with sp3, one with sp2 the other is a vista home premium with the latest updates.

AVG is free version and the most up to date as I redownloaded it on all all three machines with a fresh install.

Thanks a lot

Does Vista Home Premium with latest updates include SP1?

I suggest that you uninstall AVG on 1 PC & test.

Which programs will not update?
Please identify PCs uniquely & problem programs specific to each PC.

Do the PCs connect via ethernet or wi fi?

Take the router out of the equation; connect a PC, with AVG installed directly to the modem. Reboot PC. Verify that you can connect to the internet. If successful, try to update. If successful, provide router brand, model & version. Check a postage stamp sized sticker on the bottom or back, most likely, of the router.

Simply because you have downloaded the latest AVG does not mean that the latest updates came along.

The more information you provide, the better equipped will we be to assist you.

The vista machine does have sp1 but the updates are not completely up to date as it says it is trying to install 3 updates but fails - presumably down to the same issue.

The XP machines will not update automatic windows updates, nor avg. This is both with and without avg.

The computer connect by ethernet into an MSI NAT wireless router, into a cable modem.

I am not at the property with the PCs right now but they are spread over a large house with the router and modem in an inaccessible place to hard wire in. I may try my own laptop wired in to see if it perhaps is the router blocking it.

Thanks for the help

Try updating in Safe Mode. Usually does it when it won't normally accept downloads.

I cannot get avg to update in safe mode - it only loads a basic interface with no updates -unless I misunderstood?

Thanks

It doesn't have a button to click to look for updates on the main AVG interface?

If you cannot update Windows & cannot update AVG, I think the problem is NOT with AVG, but with Windows. You had mentioned "I appreciate AVG has been having issues however this would not affect other malware/spyware progs that also arent updating.". AGAIN, which programs?

Verify that your PC's time & date are correct.

I think you should move your thread to the XP forum, if the following does not work.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

Try to download and install the Vista updates manually. If that fails, start a thread in the Vista forum, referencing this thread. Provide the update #s and error codes.

Check the control panel, admin tools > event viewer for errors related to the Vista updates, as well as control panel > Problem Reports and Solutions; and control panel > Windows update > "view update history" on the left. Look for a failed item. Open it to obtain details & error codes.

Best of success.
