Should I be concerned? What's causing this?
Should I be concerned? What's causing this?
Every time I backup my Quicken Home & Business 2007 data, two rogue files are created in the Backup file. One is a pcAnywhere Caller Index file that I believe is an IDX file. The other is a Video CD Movie file that I believe is a LOG file. Both are about 500 KB in size. I have pcAnywhere installed on my home network but do not use it. This only started happening in recent months. Running XP Pro 2002 with SP3.

As the title asks - is this recurring event anything to be concerned about and what may be causing it? PLEASE, don't even mention Intuit tech support!

Hello and welcome to Tech Guy Forum
Open my computer.
across the top, left click tools > folder options > "view" tab. In the large area with white background, look for "hide extensions ...". If checked, uncheck it.
OK.
Open the location of the backup folder for Quicken.
What are the file names?

Go to jotti.org . At jotti, you can individual files with > 30 antivirus scans.
browse to the location of the files in question.
Upload them, one at a time.
Scan.
If any bad guys are found, create & upload a screenshot.

1 method to use to provide information requested is to create screen shots.
On your keyboard, look for a key labeled "print screen" OR "PrtSc" OR "PRN SCN" or some variation.
When you want to capture that which is displayed, press the print screen button.
Open Paint [ start > programs / all programs > accessories > paint [ rarely MS Paint]
Maximize Paint
left click "edit"
Left click "paste"
file > save as.
Save the file to any location of your choice.
File name: your choice, for example: "filename"
save as type: left click down pointing arrow. Left click jpg / jpeg
Left click "save" / "ok".

The file name has now been saved as filename.jpg [ or filename.jpeg ].

Return to the thread.
Left click "go advanced".

Left click "manage attachments"
left click "browse"
browse to the location, on your computer, where you saved "filename.jpg"
Left click filename.jpg
left click "open"
left click Upload"
close window of upload screen after the file has been uploaded.

enter text into the reply area.
left click "submit"

What anti virus and anti spyware programs do you run? How often do you run them?

For assistance with Q & QB, I suggest Business Apps or Other Apps at http://forums.techguy.org/48-software-hardware/

That is probably normal behavior. I doubt that the file created is a video file. It may just have the same file ending as a video file. What makes you think it is a log? Try opening it in Wordpad and see.

RF123:

Thanks for directing me to jotti.org. Both files checked out OK. Some relief knowing they are not a threat. I have avast & ThreatFire running resident.

The pcAnywhere Caller Index File has an IDX extension and the Video CD Movie file is a DAT file. If I followed your directions correctly, you should see the screen shot of the folder with files created today.

Also appreciate your advice on which forum this should have been posted. I wasn't sure if this was a security or software issue.

Intuit online tech support finally gave up on this issue. Kept referring me to dead links and was unable to open my attached screen shots. They referred my issue up the line and I am to expect a telephone call next week. This could be interesting.

You are welcome.

Sorry, I see no screen shots attached.

.dat files are not video files.

Keep us posted.

Backup your Q \ QB data regularly; store it on an optical disk and a flash drive. As a different member of TGF notes, any data worth keeping should be backed up to 2 different destinations.
