S 3010:
Welcome to Tech Guy Forum.
Do you consider yourself, in computer expertise: beginner, intermediate, advanced?
In addition to Byteman's comments, with which I agree, I will add the following.
1. When were you last able to successfully download something to your desktop? What changed since then?
2. Try downloading to a different location. Create a folder on your C: drive, called "downloads_2009" [without the "" ]. Then download to that folder.
3. Some antimalware, such as Combofix is typically downloaded to the desktop. It is possible that you have a malware infestation.
4. What anti virus and anti spyware programs are currently installed?
5. What is the status of your Windows updates? Do you have your PC set to obtain updates automatically?
Control panel > switch to classic view, if necessary > automatic updates
6. To check your update history, using IE, go to
www.microsoft.com/updates
Upper right, left click "Microsoft Update". Follow the prompts. Eventually, upper left, you will see a link for reviewing your update history.
What is your most recent successful update [ update # & date of update ]?
What is your most recent failed update [ update # & date of update ]?
In the "update" column, left click on the title / link of the most recently failed update.
Provide that information in your next post to this thread.
7. Which browser are you using, FF or IE? Which version of each? Try the other browser. You can download FF at
www.getfirefox.com .
8. Download & run [ need to save it first ], ATF Cleaner from
www.atribune.org
NOTE: Be sure you know all user names & passwords stored on your computer. Running ATF Cleaner, or similar products, or manually clearing your computer's cache may result in the removal of user names and passwords from your computer's cache.
