Question Solved: Cannot install AVG Antivirus
Using Sony laptop with Windows XP. Trying to install AVG and even other programs like Driver Scanner from you but when downloading to desktop the icon on my computer shows 0 bytes, no matter what I save to desktop since I cannot Run. When I click on icon on my desktop the following error message appears.
"Documents and settings\Zenone\Desktop\driver Scanner is not a valid Win 32 Application". What should I do next to rid this problem?

Hi,

I'm not familiar with that program...appears you are clicking on an advertisement that appears on our site....we don't put those there.

That is, we are not reccomending you to get or use that softwware, that is just one of a set of ads that the site owner does not have a choice about.

AVG should be downloaded from here:

http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Vir...-10320142.html

First> Delete any other downloads you recently got that do not seem to work correctly....any of those 0 byte things also....

At the page click "Download Now"

Try getting AVG to save to the desktop again. The full file download is quite large, about 58 Megabytes.

S 3010:
Welcome to Tech Guy Forum.

Do you consider yourself, in computer expertise: beginner, intermediate, advanced?

In addition to Byteman's comments, with which I agree, I will add the following.

1. When were you last able to successfully download something to your desktop? What changed since then?

2. Try downloading to a different location. Create a folder on your C: drive, called "downloads_2009" [without the "" ]. Then download to that folder.

3. Some antimalware, such as Combofix is typically downloaded to the desktop. It is possible that you have a malware infestation.

4. What anti virus and anti spyware programs are currently installed?

5. What is the status of your Windows updates? Do you have your PC set to obtain updates automatically?
Control panel > switch to classic view, if necessary > automatic updates

6. To check your update history, using IE, go to www.microsoft.com/updates
Upper right, left click "Microsoft Update". Follow the prompts. Eventually, upper left, you will see a link for reviewing your update history.
What is your most recent successful update [ update # & date of update ]?
What is your most recent failed update [ update # & date of update ]?
In the "update" column, left click on the title / link of the most recently failed update.
Provide that information in your next post to this thread.

7. Which browser are you using, FF or IE? Which version of each? Try the other browser. You can download FF at www.getfirefox.com .

8. Download & run [ need to save it first ], ATF Cleaner from www.atribune.org
NOTE: Be sure you know all user names & passwords stored on your computer. Running ATF Cleaner, or similar products, or manually clearing your computer's cache may result in the removal of user names and passwords from your computer's cache.

9. XP Pro / Home / Media Ctr? Which SP?
RIGHT click "my computer".
Left click "properties".

10. 1 method to use to provide information requested is to create screen shots.
On your keyboard, look for a key labeled "print screen" OR "PrtSc" OR "PRN SCN" or some variation.
When you want to capture that which is displayed, press the print screen button.
Open Paint [ start > programs / all programs > accessories > paint [ rarely MS Paint]
Maximize Paint
left click "edit"
Left click "paste"
file > save as.
Save the file to any location of your choice.
File name: your choice, for example: "filename"
save as type: left click down pointing arrow. Left click jpg / jpeg
Left click "save" / "ok".

The file name has now been saved as filename.jpg [ or filename.jpeg ].

Return to the thread.
Left click "go advanced".

Left click "manage attachments"
left click "browse"
browse to the location, on your computer, where you saved "filename.jpg"
Left click filename.jpg
left click "open"
left click Upload"
close window of upload screen after the file has been uploaded.

enter text into the reply area.
left click "submit"
