Solved: Group Policy Blocking Firewall Control
I'd like to turn on Windows Firewall. When I go into security center in control panel it says to go to Firewall general tab but it informs me that "Group Policy" is controlling settings. I'm told that no such group policy is in place. This is a Dell laptop that is used on network at office & brought home every day. Running XP SP3.

If it is your office and you are the administrator then I would look for an infection and post hjt log in the Malware forum.
If it is a workplace computer, ask the administrator to turn firewall on if you have to work at home

I agree with bp936.

If this computer is personal computer, at home, for example:
Do you have another firewall in use, perhaps as part of a suite [ Norton, McAfee, Zone Alarm, AVG ] Internet Security Suite?

Which version of Windows? Which service pack?

The screen shots [ VERY helpful! ] are similar to, but different than my XP Pro SP3 images for Windows FW.

I'll wager $s to donuts that your PC is infested with malware.

Personally, I think you should click on the "report" link of your post and ask the moderator to move your thread to the

malware removal forum, to be certain that the malware is gone.

jimjpell:
Today, I used a Win XP Home SP2 PC & that Windows FW screen matched yours.

I apologize for providing information which may not have applied to your situation.

Keep us posted.

How did you solve the issue?

start > run
type: gpedit.msc
OK

maximize screen
Windows policy tree:
Local Computer Policy
/Computer Configuration/
Administrative Templates/
Network/
Network Connections
Windows FW
Standard
On right, look for "windows fw protect all network connections"
Open it, by, for example, double left clicking
click "enable"
OK

Repeat for domain

Did you set the policy for standard or domain or both?

Send me a bouquet of daffodils.
= just kidding

You are welcome.
