windows defender message: a system change has been made by a known application...
lately, i often receive a message above the notification area. it says: a system change has been made by a known application

change type: application execution

application: c:\windows\system32\mswsock.dll

i found a post from the past by searching, and tried the remedy suggested [check and repair winsock corruption and reset theTcp/IP protocol], but was unable to do this, as for the former, i was told the command 'required elevation' [i have no idea what this means] and for the latter, that the command was 'not found'.
this may have something to do with the fact that i was advised to hit 'start', type 'cmd', right-click on 'cmd' and hit 'run as administrator'--when i right-clicked on 'cmd', that option was not there... please advise!!!

thanks so much--

To escalate , right click on the application and choose 'Run as Administrator"

To run cmd as an administrator, go to Start Menu, All Programs , Accessories, right click on 'Command Prompt' and choose Run as Adminstrator.

thank you, lunarlander. i did this, and it appeared to work, but now i'm getting the messages again. i don't recall changing any settings and neither my antivirus [CA security suite] nor windows defender find anything out of sorts. this is really infuriating!!!!! any input??

thanks again for the initial reply and also for anything else...
