Question Is anti-malware test lab a fraud or not?
There is one site called Anti-Malware test lab that offers reviews of different anti-virus software (http://www.anti-malware-test.com/). They conduct the following tests:

*Polymorphic virus protection test
*Proactive antivirus protection test
*Antivirus product self-protection test
*Active infections treatment test
*Anti-rootkit test
*Packers support test

The tests seem legitimate and they also include their testing methology. The problem is that in partcularly the active infections treatment test well-known and respected anti-viruses fail miserably. Eset Nod32 gets 0%, Avira Antivir gets 20%, McAfee VirusScan 2008 (33%), BitDefender Antivirus 2009 (33%), AVG Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware 8.0 (33%).

I am partcularly concerned about Nod32, 0% wtf???

On the other hand this kind of test is a test that no other test lab seems to carry out. This test is intended to test each antiviruses ability to clean an already infected system. On the other hand other major test labs test only for the detection rates not the cleaning rates, like for example av-comparatives.org

Still, the question remains is this site legitimate? Are the tests actually true?

I would rather if you answered based on your experience!!! Is NOD32 or Antivir really that bad in removing malware from an already infected system?

. . .Is NOD32 or Antivir really that bad in removing malware from an already infected system?
I've never heard of this Web site, so surfed to it to take a look. The first thing I noticed is that it gave the "Platinum Award" to Dr. Web Anti-Virus. I've also never heard of that AV, so did a search on it and found this http://www.bestsecuritytips.com/xfse...icleid+134.htm. IMO, doesn't read all that well. So this may be a site that's pushing some AV programs based on (e.g.) how much the companies pay them.

I happen to use Avira AV, and did extensive research on it and other free AVs. Everything I found said that it was a well-above-average AV, and the price is definitely right! Check out http://blogs.computerworld.com/peopl...aviras_antivir.

Have you tried using the European Common Market test file for AV programs, EICAR http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm? This is a fake virus that Europe uses to test the effectiveness of AV programs. Avira not only detects it, but DOESN'T LET IT INSTALL! I suggest you try it, and I'll bet NOD32 not just finds it, but blocks it from even getting into your system.

Hope this is helpful.

In my (non technical) opinion, programs that stop infections before they install are to be preferred to ones that may, or may not, clean up well after the malware has gained access. Surely the emphasis should be on prevention rather than cure?

I can confirm that NOD 32 goes ballistic when presented with EICAR and quarantines and deletes it immediately (at least it did when I tried it)..

I do not go by independent test labs! On whats good and bad and so forth. The users of the product is what I go by. ESET NOD32 Antivirus or ESET Smart Security is one of the best Security products out there. Just use the Advanced Search for "NOD32" here in the General Security thread and see what the users say...........
