Firewall blocks network access
I have XP on a dell d600 that I'm trying to access. If I turn the firewall off, I can access it. I'm using Linux Fedora Core 10 on a dell D600 to access the XP machine. The linux box is able to access a Windows server at work.

I have gone to CP-Security-Firewall-Exceptions-File and Printer Sharing (checked)-445 (checked)-Custom (address of my linux machine)

When I try to access the XP machine, I get "Unable to mount, Failed to retrieve share list from server" . The network is on the internet so I don't want to turn off the firewall.

I'm just not figuring out how to loosen the firewall rules so that my linux machine can access.

Thanks for any suggestions. Dave.

let me get this straight, are you trying to access your home's Windows XP Share through the internet from your office?

At home I'm trying to access my Windows XP Share on my home network that is also on a DSL line to the internet using a linux machine. The example of being able to access the work Windows Server is just to demonstrate why I think the Linux machine is set up properly. Sorry to be confusing. Dave.

You have to forward some ports on your home router to the Windows PC. Did you do that ? Otherwise your traffic will never reach the Windows PC.

I don't know about ports. I can access the Windows XP with another windows XP machine, and if I turn off the firewall on the Windows XP machine I can access it with the linux machine. Just not with the firewall turned on.

For anything between your work computer and home computer(s) you should really be using a VPN between work and home. Learn about it, use it to be secure.

I'm not trying to work between work and home. All of these questions are about my home network. My home linux machine cannot access my home Windows XP Share machine over my home wireless network unless the Windows XP machine firewall is turned off. Would VPN be applicable here?

According to this Howto document:
http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/w...roubleshooting

You may want to try out ZoneAlarm and see if it makes your XP behave.
