Buffer overrun detected
HI I am a new guy to this forum and excuse me my ignorance about computers that I only used it read some model railroad web pages but a few days ago when I want to check my model railroad web pages (such as www.ogaugerr.com) a small window open and show: Buffer overrun has been detected which has corrpted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must be terminated. Please I need some help to solve this matter and I will appreciate any kind of help. There are some programs (such as preuvx and ErrorRepairtool) that claim that they can fix this problem. Does anybody knows how serious and reliable are those programs? I am using windows XP. Thanks in advance.

Hello & Welcome to TG Forum.

Was the page you were viewing a .pdf file?

Did the address end in .pdf?

There is a new defect / vulnerability that exploits .PDF file reading in Adobe Reader, aka Adobe Acrobat Reader, aka Acrobat Reader.

Please avoid the temptation of using 1 of the advertised tools. No disparagement is intended towards these companies.

A buffer overrun can have multiple causes. 1 cause can be computer malware
[ viruses, spyware, adware ].

Which version of Windows is on your computer? XP, per your profile? Which XP? Which service pack?
Which version of Windows is on your computer?
RIGHT click "my computer" or "computer".
Left click "properties".

Which browser are you using; Internet Explorer or FireFox or Opera or other?
Open said browser. Across the top, look for "help". Go down to "about . ..."
If you open IE & don't see "help", look to the right, below the address bar, for "tools".
Left click "menu bar".

Here is 1 free reference. http://books.google.com/books?id=Men...result#PPP1,M1

When using the internet, avoid free items and sites advertising freeware, free programs, unless a reputable site, such as Tech Guy Forum recommends the item.

If you are using IE 7, you can learn more, here.

You are welcome.

If you provide answers to my initial questions, we can continue to assist you.

Has the error / warning continued to appear?

I provided the reference to Simpson's Bible as an addition to your library. It was not intended to suggest that your questions at TGF are unwanted. We are here to help.

Go to http://thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?...pmod;dl=item10 and download 'Hijack This!' self installer. Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website Double click on the

file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu.
Click on the entry in start menu to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.

"Over 50% of malware doesn't show at all in a HJT log so asking "is my log clean?" is an impossible question to answer and all anyone can say is that there are no obvious signs of malware in a log but that doesn't

mean you are not infected. We need to know what is wrong, such as: pop ups, diverts, strange messages or warnings etc."
