Solved: hack or virus? please help...
hi, i dont know if i have been hacked or its a virus. and the best way to handle it. i have confidential patient info on my pc so it could get serious.

ok

i have home broadband and mobile inet

i always use my home net

a few days ago system started acting up, when i press my left mouse key it doesnt open the folder but rather opens the search window. and freezez, when i try and close it another search window opens.

i learnt to press ctrl + ALT +shift on right and left sides to reset mouse and keyboards settings...
this works for a VERY short while and then the problem comes back

also...
when i was checking my mail, everything froze and the cursor started flasing in random places

? and at the minute i'm using my mobile bband and i have no problems...

so could it be a hack?

previously i (stupidly) had no password on my router. i have done that now.

i have also switched my broadband off at the mains...

any answers??? help me out please... thanks

i have just done a full comp scan using avg...
i am considering changing the ip address too.

so hack or virus? any thing else i can do??

Please read this and then post here.

In addition to following 1002richards' advice:

Yes, certainly find our your legal responsibilities if you believe personal information has been compromised. I am NOT an attorney. Your local law enforcement or FBI office may be able to assist you with advice about patient information that may have been compromised.

In addition to a password for your router:
1. Make sure it is a strong password: > 20 characters, a combination of letters, numbers, special characters. No spaces. Contains no word found in any dictionary of any language.
2. Use WPA2 - AES encryption with a 63 character pass phrase.
3. Read the 6 dummest ways to secure a wi fi network.

Avoid the temptation of using a business computer [ or computer with business related information on it ]:
For games
To access sites that offer gambling
To access sites that offer free items other than sites recommeded by TGF;
To access sites that offer pictures of naked people.

I am not the software police. Most free, legitimate software is intended for use ONLY on personal computers, not business computers.
No disparagement is intended. Your AVG may be a commercial version.

I looked at your HJT log and comments in the malware removal forum. Good that you followed 1002r's advice. Please review my comments in #3, above.
