“THE VIRUS"
Was downloading files on the LapTop… went to open one of the files with windows media player, said that to play the file I needed to download like an add on or something for media player… Media Player DivX or something similar…. Clicked OK and bingo, has done the following……. (as soon as I clicked for some reason I thought hmmmm, I shouldn’t of done that, and I was right)
- no net access… after talking to an iinet support person, I believe it may of deleted my “network drivers” – I cannot connect to the net wirelessly or Ethernet cable… You go to the network connections page in control panel and you either get a blank page or it just sits there and thinks… when you search for a wireless connection it tells you you need to look up document such and such, at microsofts help site, or similar…..
- cannot system restore back to a date prior… it either just sits there and does nothing or tells me it cannot system restore at this time…
- dialog boxes come up frequently (perhaps when something is trying to access the net?) that reads :
“svchost.exe” application error…
The instruction ……..referenced at memory……… the memory could not be read.
The instruction at ……..referenced at memory ………. The memory could not be written.
Now since all this happened, I seemed to still be able to move files and other stuff although things/processes would frequently lock up, likewise, if you tried to watch any video….
At this time I thought it best to get all the stuff I could off the C and D drives on the Lap Top…. I keep most of my stuff on external hard drives hey and have two passport drives that are always plugged in… (photos, music, movies, everything…) When I realised I was in real trouble I unplugged these. The things that were on C and D (on laptop) drives that were important (photos, tax returns, some programs files etc.) I made copies of and was able to put them on another external “big” external drive I have.
After this, I got out the old PC and plugged the Ethernet cable in for net access etc… was all good… UNTIL, I plugged in my big external drive in to the PC (didn’t even look at the files on it I don’t think) and Bingo! I’ve given the PC the virus and it is doing exactly the same thing…. Cool hey! The question is now, are my other two passport drives in the same boat? If I plug them into a computer, will they give it the virus like “the big” drive did my PC?
I started the PC in Safe Mode, still would not system restore
Can’t seem to start the LapTop in Safe Mode…
Virus/Spyware:
- had AVG on the Laptop and as far as I know it was up to date and scanned all ok and since having the thing has still scanned ok (although “off the net”)
- SpyBot, have been unable to get to run on LapTop since contracting the virus. Uninstalled, and when reinstalling, of course it wants to get on the net to update, therefore will not re-install.
Must admit, I’m a bit concerned about the most important stuff (my photos and the music) in recovering which are on the passport drives and backed up on the Big external drive…. But these are or may be infected….. the files can be seen! But how do I get them off infected? drives???
Can you help me please??? Please, please, please????
