Question New PC but which AV to use?
Hi there,

I have just bought a new PC (Vista home premium) but im not sure on whats the best Anti Virus program to get.

It doesnt have to be free just the best around.

I was told that Norton 2009 is really good now but im not sure. Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks.

norton antivirus runs on top of programs, which means more security but it slows your computer preformance.
look at this link, it might help http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
also http://www.cnet.com/topic-reviews/antivirus.html
as for the free onces, you can use clamwin from http://www.clamwin.com i recommend that
i hope this helps

Go for Kaspersky Internet Suite2009, in which the A-V has better heuristic properties. You can also try the ESET's security suite (Nod32) for one month for free before you decide which one's better! Both are shareware.

You'll get a lot of opinions..you can try some and decide which one you like just don't try too many since security programs tend to leave files behind when you uninstall them,

Clamwin doesn't offer a real-time scanner...

You can use Norton or Mcafee. Both of them are really good antivirus software program. You can also use "Antimalwarebytes" "Superantispyware" for the malwares and spywares issues.

Most people use McAfee or Norton because the computer maker has a deal with one of them which will nag you to pay them when your free period ends. They are awkward to uninstall properly as well.

However Norton 2009 seems to be much improved, so if you want to pay an annual charge to someone that could be a good choice.

I just believe that Comodo Internet Security will keep you as safe as any other and as a bonus it is free for anyone to use for ever.

As Gizzy mentioned, you'll keep on getting each one's favourite as the best security suite around! Since you mentioned "need not be free", i did not comment on any of the free programs around. Comodo Internet Security Suite is a NEW KID ON THE BLOCK! Since it's going to stay free ,you lose nothing by waiting a year or two(when the inputs start arriving) before shifting to Comodo. I sincerely suggest either ESET's smart security suite(Nod32) or Kaspersky Internet Security Suite (which i use and am as happy as a duck in a pond). These are being used widely and the experience base is big enough to give you confidence to choose either of these two products(ESET OR KIS2009).

Take a decision fast because there ARE malicious people out there to enter your unprotected PC once it's connected to the net!Best wishes.

That's odd, because no one that's posted in this thread has mentioned it, LOL.

EDIT: My post count number is the year the US became the US.

Don't overlook 'Sandboxie'
This from their website:
Benefits of the Isolated Sandbox
Secure Web Browsing: Running your Web browser under the protection of Sandboxie means that all malicious software downloaded by the browser is trapped in the sandbox and can be discarded trivially.
Enhanced Privacy: Browsing history, cookies, and cached temporary files collected while Web browsing stay in the sandbox and don't leak into Windows.
Secure E-mail: Viruses and other malicious software that might be hiding in your email can't break out of the sandbox and can't infect your real system.
