So my cpu (old 2.4 gighz, WinXP) was recently infected with what McAfee has termed the "Generic!Artemis Trojan". I'm the type that would rather be safe than sorry, so I plan on just FDISKing the thing and starting fresh. Below are a few questions: 1. I have nothing of any consequence on the cpu in question, so I really don't need to pull anything off the HD. However, there are a few word docs and pictures that would be nice to have. I figured I'd email these items to myself using Gmail. And then after I FDISK the cpu and start fresh, I'd pull them off of Gmail. My understanding of Gmail is that it will scrub everything before it accepts it so I believe this to be a good route to make sure nothing I try to salvage is carrying any harmful things with it. Is this a correct assumption?/Sound like a good route? 2. The cpu in question is currently hardwired to the internet via a router. Meaning the connection from the wall is feeding into the router and a LAN cable is feeding the cpu from the router. Is there a possibility that the router firmware could have been compromised? And if so, will the hard reset to restore factory settings do any good? 3. Two laptops were, at the time of the infection, connected wirelessly to the same source/router as my infected desktop. However, they were just sitting idle in windows xp. Should I worry about the laptops being infected? The signs of infection were abundantly obvious on my desktop... so far, nothing fishy at all on the two laptops. Thanks for any help in advance!
