XP Boot Virus
Hello. Have a Gateway desktop with XP and recently hit a cascading popup problem (that evaded my security prog) causing me to disconnect and restart. The reboot went to the 'Windows shutdown improperly" screen with the normal startup options. Problem is none of them work. They bring up the Windows logo for a few moments, then a shutdown, then a restart back to the shutdown improperly screen. Trying to start directly in safe mode brings you to the same page. Tried using my system recovery and Windows re-install disks but the computer ignors the disk drive and goes right to the shutdown improperly page. Opened bios, which does work on startup, and made sure the disk drive was the first boot option but that didn't help (even tried disabling the hard drive boot option but that didn't help either). Tried using a couple of CD operating systs, including Ultimate Boot. They booted up fine but none of their diagnostics helped. Any suggestions on fixing what I assume is some type of boot virus? Thanks.

You will need to report your post to be moved to the Malware category, as the general security isn't for removing a virus.
