another AV question
Hi. I've just gone thru a long drawn out episode with cybertech to remove/fix my computer of which I am eternally grateful. There is just a few things that I would like to do now. Seeing as cybertech is a volunteer, his/her time is very limited on this site, so I would like to ask an AV question.

My AVG has not wanted to update in forever, basically since my problems started. Now that it's fixed..I hope..it still won't update. When I say " I hope" I mean that I have NO AV running on the computer so I can't really check around on different sites to see if my connection problems are gone to tell cybertech.

All of the places that you guys suggest to check out and read about RE: AV's is basically furbish to me. In other words....don't understand a thing. I just would really love for someone to tell me what to put on here, and yes I'll do it. Here's what is going on at my house, to help you decide.

Five ppl on it. 3 are children always on IM/facebook/nexopia/ares/itunes/email/various internet sites. One adult always does his online banking/ email/reads newspapers from overseas/checks out various distributor sites that have to do with his business. The other adult..Me..email/IM/surfs around on internet/connects with my avon site and a few other places I belong to. Thats's it. Hey, we're boring.

From what I understand here AVG isn't that great anymore, so I guess that's not a problem, seeing as I can't update it anyway. I just uninstalled it, and would really love to stick one on right away. Before those blasted kids get home.

The only thing I have running on the computer right now is malwarebytes that cybertech asked me to put on to deal with my other problem. Please tell me, on top of a good AV, what would be good to have on here to hopefully protect us to some degree from the nasties floating around out there.

I think you requested help from Cybertech. But i just can't stop myself from replying. Sorry 4 that

On top of a good AV, you can use Returnil Virtual System. When u will face any problems with your existing anti-virus, switch to Virtual mode using Returnil. At that time no matter whatever you do, whatever site u visit, no virus can harm your computer. If there is a virus attack, what you have to do is to simply reboot your computer and all the virus will be deleted. Actually if there is a virus attack, the attack will be on virtual system, and your real system will be okay

I'm currently waiting for a reply from cybertech regarding another matter, but I think cyber only checks in like once a day, maybe 2x if I'm lucky. I'm not expecting to hear again till tomorrow. Yes, cyber has a life other than here...but in the meantime my nagging children are driving me nuts to get on. I can only guard the computer for so long. I have to go to the bathroom at some point. Actually I have caught them sitting down in front of here after I have come out of said bathroom. Can't do that without some decent AV protection/spyware protection. If I get this put on right now, then I can further help cybertech with the questions that were asked of me. The only place I have come to without ANY protection is here.

MUST HAVE VIRUS/SPYWARE PROTECTION

The kind that I want to install is the ones that don't require a whole lot of brain power to use. When it starts to ask if I want to do this/that/and the other....I back away slowly...and I'll end up right back here again with a million questions.

Give Avira AntiVir(free) a look.
Good protection and not heavy on resources.

okay avira is downloading as we speak..is there anything else that I should have installed on here?? I used to have CCleaner. Reinstall it? Or something else? Reinstall ccleaner AND something else?? I also used to have adaware. What's with superantispyware? Better than adaware or what?

Oh. I also used to have avast on here. When I was trying to update AVG before, a window popped up informing me that I have multiple AV's on my computer. Is there a way to make sure that EVERYTHING is off while I'm running Avir?? I've read that Avast likes to lurk around even tho YOU THINK you've uninstalled it.

My personal arsenal is
Comodo firewall
Avira AntiVir
SuperAntiSpyware
MalwareBytes
SpywareBlaster
SpywareGuard
WinPatrol
Of those, I let Comodo, Avira, SpywareGuard and WinPatrol start on bootup. SAS and MBAM I use as on demand scanners.

You should not use multiple anti-viruses in a single computer. It will create serious issues. You have to decide which one to keep. Uninstall all anti-viruses before installing any-one.

CCleaner is a different application. It tweaks your computer. No need to uninstall it.

yeah, u heard right. This is the problem with avast and specially AVG (in many cases). These programs do not remove some registry entries even if u have uninstalled it. And here begins the problem. If u go to install other AV's u will not be allowed unless that entries have been completely removed.

And here AVIRA is different. Although it has the highest detection of viruses, but in the future if u ever uninstall it, it will not leave any traces behind

keep default settings

The names given by harlow are superb s/w's. This combination is far better than even the best internet security available in the market. But if you are a beginner then u might require some assistance with the s/w's

I'm currently waiting for comodo to download. While it's doing that I'm going out for about an hour, hopefully the child will not get on here. Tell me what I should do to find out if I have any residual avast or avg lurking on here, and if I do what steps should I take toget rid of it.

I currently have combo fix and ATF cleaner on my desktop and in my computer from cybertech when we were fixing my computer. What should I do with those??

Oh my goodness. I hope I don't have to make a whole bunch of decisions on comodo when I get back. Like I said I hate making decisions about things that I know TOTALLY NOTHING ABOUT...I like to leave that to you guys. EXPERTS. Hey, in this instance, I love to be told what to do. Do this, do that, click on this or that..JUST DO IT. :O

dont use that combo fix and ATF cleaner. They are used only for special perposes. Uninstall them.

if you dont face any problems in installing any s/w's leave that residual avg and avast.
