Mcafee Download Issue
Would anyone have any idea why I can't download McAfee form their website? I paid for anti-virus and went to their page to download, click on the download and nothing happens. I see the download button compress, a new address shows on the bottom of the screen until I release the download button. The green download bar loads to full as if the page will re-direct or in this case, install the download box, but then, nothing. The page never moves to show any installer (the download box with run, save or cancel). McAfee says that I have something stopping their download from running. I have gone through all of the programs installed and only found one, SUPER Antispyware that I could find a removal tool for which I ran. I never had any other virus program on here other than McAfee. As directed by their tech department, I ran the McAfee removal program too. The other programs I had installed, I removed from add or remove programs. They were CCleaner, MS Malicious Software Removal Tool, Gary Utilities and PSI digitally signed by Secunia ApS and WinPotrol digitally signed by BillP Studios. I have tried stopping all startup items by un-checking them in msconfig utility. I ran SUPER Antispyware and MS Malicious Software Removal tool to make sure my PC was clean, which it is. Then I removed them as stated earlier. My pc is XP Home and was built at a local retailer. I can run other installer and they will mount with no problems. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Sounds more like a toolbar popup blocker....do you have the Google toolbar? That has a pop blocker...and, IE 7 has it's own, turn it off.

http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/u...upblocker.mspx

There are several more toolbars etc that carry popup blockers....

And, please take the time to go through this info> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/843017

Hello and thank you for your reply. I tried disabling all the popup blockers as well but it was no help. I noticed that McAfee wants everything MS updated, so I tried running Windows updates but that would not work either. I received an error 0x8DDD0004. I found several repairs and tried there suggestions. I finally notice that the yellow ActiveX applet does not open when in Microsoft updates. I’m think that is the problem with the updates. I'm missing WUWebControl Class in the add-on and have yet to figure out how to get it there. After working on all the .dll re-starts, removing all spyware programs, looking for uninstallers for them and trying to re-run McAfee and that still not working, I ran Windows File Checker (Start-Run- sfc /scannow). I re-tried McAfee and what do you know, it installed! Now I just have to figure out how to install WUWebControl Class. That may be a new post.

Hi,
Try Dial-a-Fix

I've used it and had good success with it, but not always....

http://majorgeeks.com/download4899.html

Do Not try any other of the fixes, it is meant to be used only when something is really broken.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ Next:_ _ _ _

There is more help I can get for you to try to repair WU> let's start with Hijackthis which will give a good idea of things starting up and the installed softwares.....

go to Click here to download HJTinstall.exe
  • Click the blue "Download the Hijackthis Installer" link
  • Save HJTinstall.exe to your desktop. DO NOT just press run from the website
  • Double click on the HJTinstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
  • Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
don't forget this second part

Please also do this:
  • Open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.
  • Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.
  • Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad.
  • Copy and paste that list here in your reply

Hi,

This could be your problem, please try what it says

http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/03...indows-update/

And do this:

First, here's a simple guide about Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malw...antivirus-2008

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

This is what I got from the scan. I'm not sure if the problem with windows update is only related with IE 8. I was hopeful that IE 8 would fix my update problem so I downloaded it thinking this would add the WUWebControl Class add-on. That didn't work, and based on your last reply, I may not be able to update until a patch comes out for IE 8. Prior to this, I had IE 6. That's when I noticed I could not update from MS and the WUWebControl Class was missing. Thank you for your help in this matter. I must say, I’m learning a lot.

Hi,

I need to see a brand new HJthis log please....

And, try clicking the Windows Update link available when you use the Start button....

All Programs>Windows Update is at the top section of that list. See if it connects and does at least look for updates for your computer and tell me no/yes.

I think the IE 8 problem does apply.

Didn't you see this?

"Microsoft plans to add IE8 support to its software update page, but it's not available yet. In the meantime, you can get your updates by clicking the Emulate IE7 button in IE8 and restarting your browser."

And, try clicking the Windows Update link available when you use the Start button....

All Programs>Windows Update is at the top section of that list. See if it connects and does at least look for updates for your computer and tell me no/yes.

I can see and use the link without any trouble but I still get the error 0x8DDD0004

I think the IE 8 problem does apply.

Didn't you see this?

"Microsoft plans to add IE8 support to its software update page, but it's not available yet. In the meantime, you can get your updates by clicking the Emulate IE7 button in IE8 and restarting your browser."

I will try this any let you know if that worked. I do notice that even when IE 6 was installed I did not receive the ActiveX applet and WUWebControl Class as an add-on is still not there. I do appreciate your help with this and sorry so long between replies. I hardly ever am able to get on.

Start Hijackthis, click to just Scan> when the utility finishes, find the item I have below in your scan window> then, put a check into the box next to it in your scan window. Make sure that ALL other windows are Closed, meaning no games, no chats, no emails, no IMs, no webpages open, all other windows are closed not just minimized....then, Click on "Fix Checked" in hijackthis to remove the item:

RE> Windows Update> The Active X control is installed, it is listed here in the HJT log, they are installed in Windows in the "Downloaded Program Files" folder location on the hard drive. The problem is usually a blocking setting from a firewall or other security program, so be patient, I will get to this, just need to take care of the minor malware you have/had first.

O16 - DPF: {6414512B-B978-451D-A0D8-FCFDF33E833C} (WUWebControl Class) - http://www.update.microsoft.com/wind...?1206671610703 <<<No, do not "fix" this or remove this one, this is good.

Next:

Last time I had trouble with a client's McAfee software,( I had get the latest Updates for a McAfee security suite), we had to sign into the McAfee account first, then we were able to download the updates, can you tell me if it is still that way?
Could be they require it for their software as well as the first time you update....or register....by logging in to an account.
, you could try logging in to an account, if the software still has the owner create one, it is similar to registering a program, and it may be that it is required. You might be able to log into a McAfee account at their website..... the suite I used was already installed and I found a link to click on to go to the McAfee site and log in. We found we could not, but running some antimalware programs fixed that problem...

Usually you also will get a confirmation email with a link to click on, or code to type into the webpage where you download?
Did you see a link in the email that is a confirmation back to McAfee--- check your email for that.

I have seen a couple of the programs you mentioned in your first post create problems if you used certain parts of them, such as CCleaner with the Registry checking feature....if you did, it can remove the wrong things and cause you problems.

Superantispyware, at least the free edition, does not have blocking features...it is simply a scan and remove tool however, the premium version does have robust security features so I am not sure about it.

WinPatrol --- don't see it in the log so it must have been uninstalled so probably is not the cause.

It may just be IE 8.0 and the issue I found info about.

So, I will wait for a reply from you after you try that workaround for IE 8.0 and emulation.

II ran Hijackthis but, I'm sorry but I did not see this one:

O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/noc...tup1.0.1.1.cab

Looking back at the last log I just sent you, I did not see it there either. Am I missing something?

I saw (WUWebControl Class) even though it does not show up in add-on's. I was glad to see that and it looks like we are on the right track.

I have considered running an XP repair because I was worried that a change in the registry was implemented when using CCleaner. I did save registry backups for that reason.

I feel the same as you in that I may just need to hold untill IE8 has a repair.

Hi,

That entry in Hijackthis, for some reason, is not in your current scan log so don't worry about it. I saw it in Post #5.

http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/nocache/funwebproducts/ei-4/ZwinkyInitialSetup1.0.1.1.cab <<this is what the full link looks like.

If it is not in your new log, then it is gone. It must have been removed with MBAM-

because it is the same FunWebProduct type of thing as these:

C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\FunWebProducts (Adware.MyWay) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

You should do these System Restore cleanup steps- this is done routinely after cleaning malware since actually using a Restore Point now, would simply put back the malware you worked hard to remove.

*Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab. ( If there is a check in "Turn Off System Restore...."= it is Off.)
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.Wait for hourglass to stop and it says
"Turned Off"

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.
To turn System Restore back on, take the checkmark out of the box where you did.
Wait till you see "Monitoring" for the status.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

Hi, Good- I hope the patch we read about comes around shortly.

I don't think of anything else we can do. From what I have read, trying to uninstall IE 8 often does not end well.
