Finjan's Research Reveals Cybercrime Path to Millions
Finjan's Research Reveals Cybercrime Path to Millions.

Finjan shows how the rogueware was distributed using search engine optimization (SEO) techniques. Cybercriminals used SEO to optimize the distribution of their rogueware. Typos and misspelled keywords (such as "obbama" and liscense") as well as trendy keywords taken from Google Trends system were abused to show compromised websites as top search results. Subsequently, the traffic volume to the compromised websites increased significantly luring masses of potential buyers to the rogueware offering.

Tip:
One technique I use to avert such happening with my web browsing (Firefox 3.1b3), is to use the WOT add-on, coupled with the ShowIP add-on. WOT colors the web page (green, red,...) with its small icon to the left of the location bar by checking its database of good web sites, and ShowIP tells you the decimal number of the web site where you have landed.
