I personally use
Avira AntiVir(free)
Comodo firewall(free)
SuperAntiSpyware(free)
MalwareBytes(free)
SpywareBlaster(free)
SpywareGuard(free)
WinPatrol(free)
Do you begin to see aq theme going here?
Never have any problems.

SpywareGuard, WinPatrol, Comodo, and Avira are on Startup. Others are on-demand scanning, but updated daily.

A lot of security programs requires a renewal every year. That is so they make some money for their effort in generating new protection virus/spyware signatures. You can continue using the product after expiration, but you just won't be protected against new strains of virus/spyware.

Some free products, like Comodo, have a separate line of money making business, and don't rely on it to generate revenue.

There really is no "one" program that can do it all.

If you want one program to do it all, you can go with Norton 360. I was told it is quiet and non-intrusive, working quietly in the background.

The problem with the mainstream programs like McAfee and Norton is that they tend to be bloated, i.e. have too many features and use too many system resources and slow the system down. That's why I use a couple free apps, AVG and Windows Defender, and you can turn on Windows Firewall. This should be fine in most cases. I also like to run Spybot and Adware at times if I have issues.

but then they can only clear up minor issues, if you get a bad-a*s virus chances are you wont be able to use AVG etc to fix it no??!

And yea i could really do without futher system slowdowns

You can boot into Safe Mode to do your scanning if you feel that you have caught something.
Also, where does it say that they have to be on at all times?
Would really like to see your Startup listing. Could probably shave quite a bit from it and speed your boot time up in the process.

This is not correct. AVG is not any less capable than others. If you're concerned, search online for reviews of different products.

Assuming you mean the antivirus/antispyware, they don't have to be but these products usually do run a process that always runs so it can catch things as they happen, not later.

Dear blade09,
You need not even go on-line, just type AVG in the search box in this site and you will see so many posts complaining about the various problems they are facing with AVG 8.5 (Free or Bought) and the majority are long time users of AVG. Accepting that AVG is no less capable than other similar products, what everybody wants is a trouble-free program! The reason you may not see Avira Antivir mentioned so much on this site is simply because it's hassle-free. This is a problem tackling and solving site!
