no audio & error message
Hi there,

My friend recently came to me and asked me to help him with regards to his laptop.
Apparently he was setting it up for the Internet wirelessly and then the sound went. Now I have looked in device manager and the audio controller has a yellow question mark next to it.

Also another problem is that, on switching the laptop on and arriving on the desktop, a box flashes up which says the following:

Error loading C:\PROGRA~1\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\M3PLUGIN.DLL
The Specified module could not be found

I suspect he has been downloading things and this is a consequence.

Please help me on his behalf

Regards fatheroflies.

This MyWebSearch parasite is really annoying and full of adware. The owners should be sued! (that would be the day! ) Traces have been left, possibly from a previous malware removal.

Please download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything.

A qualified member of the forum, like a Trusted Advisor (Green Shield), will take a look at it.

It will help alright. The problem is obvious. Be patient, there are no Trusted Advisors online at the moment.

fatheroflies:

Go into Add Or Remove Programs in the Control Panel and look for entres such as:

Fun Web Products

My Web Search

My Web Search Email Plugin

My Way Speedbar

Search Assistant My Way

Uninstall all entries with those names.

Next, go into C:\Program Files and look for any folders with those same names. Right-click and delete all folders with those names.

Restart the computer afterwards.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.07 is outdated.

Download version 1.6.0.13 from here. Save it and don't install it yet.

Go into Add Or Remove Programs and uninstall version 1.6.0.07(and any other older version still there).

Next, go into C:\Program Files\Java. Right-click and delete any leftover java folders.

Restart the computer afterwards.

Install version 1.6.0.13.

--------------------------------------------------------------

After all the above has been done, run a new scan and then post a new HijackThis log here.

-------------------------------------------------------------

What is the brand name, model name, and model number of that laptop? I need that information so I can determine the description of the sound device in it. Without the driver being installed, the sound won't work.

All the information should be on the label on the bottom of the laptop - if it's still there and readable.

Run a HijackThis scan, place a checkmark in:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Plugin] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\M3PLUGIN.DLL,UPF

O23 - Service: My Web Search Service (MyWebSearchService) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\mwssvc.exe (file missing)

then click "Fix Checked".

Run a second scan, then post that log here.

Reply to the last section in post #5. I can't help you with the sound problem without that information.
