This didn't work for getting rid of the attachment at the bottome of the AVG ionterface upgrade notification I think he was talking about. I just tried the above instructions.

I too tried to turn of the AVG 8.5 expiry message following golferbob's suggestion but continue to get it.

I've read all the posts in this excellent thread and it appears that there are numerous free anti-virus, malware and firewall programs that work as well as, if not better than, those that you pay for.

I'm wondering if experienced posters here could suggest antivirus, malware and firewall programs that offer protection for someone who doesn't go into the "dark side" of the www but who does do online banking and occasional online shopping. I already have Malwarebytes. My O/S is Vista Home Premium.

I personally use the following:
AVG anti virus (have also use avast in the past)
Zone Alarm fire wall ( on older laptop with limited memory use the Windows firewall)
Anti Spyware:
Spy Bot Search and Destroy, Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, Windows Defender.
Common sense about opening attachments and web sites to visit.
I believe anyone to goes on line at all should use the security software.....especially if you do any online busineess.
All of these free programs are available at:
www.majorgeeks.com
www.download.com
www.filehippo.com.
Happy Computing.

Thanks, Vicks. Have you used Comodor or NOD32? I've never heard of them before and wonder if they work well. Some posters in this thread seem to like them.

Gawain,
Negative on the Comodo & Nod32.
I have been using the others for several years, with good luck, no infections on any of the computers I put them on.
Also, several other forums I frequent have also had good recommendations for them.
When I d/l any program, I save them to a folder in my documents, then I can be selective as to when to install them, also when installed, I copy the files to a flashdrive for future install, if I have any troubles with the computer.

Thanks golferbob and Vicks for the replies and suggestions. Your experiences with these types of programs help me with my choices.
