My computer had been glichy, so a friend installed Stopzilla and AVG. When I went to restart it, it flickered to the stopzilla setting, then frooze. SInce then it will only start up to the screen were it gives the options: START COMPUTER, START W/ SAFE MODE, START W/ SAFE MODE AND COMMAND PROMPT or START W/ SAFE MODE AND NETWORKING. I've tried them all- it begins to start, then goes black with the moose showing still but useless. After awhile the computer's default screen saver will pop up but nothing else! WHat show I do?

That's what happens when you let friends work on your computer. At this point you need to take it to a trusted local repair shop to have it fixed. It's gonna take some fairly advanced repair work with the Repair Console to get it fixed.

Use your Xp cd to boot from, and enter into the recovery console, when the command prompt appears, type chkdsk /p

then reboot and let us know what happened.

the command prompt doesn't come up, it goes black before then, but it runs a list of start up actions right before it goes black everytime- as if it's starting to work

If you're interested in doing a recovery, or trying to do a system restore (since this is an HP, I'm presuming it came with a recovery partition): to access the recovery partition: when your computer either *first* starts or re-starts, press the F11 key. The recovery options should come up (although to be honest, I don't remember exactly what the options are). I believe you can acess system restore through the recovery partition, though.

If you have actual recovery disks (which you would have had to make - HP has an installed program to help you with this) just put in disk 1, reboot and follow instructions.

To confirm, you are running Vista Home Premium, yes?

Good luck!

Mollie

My suggestion would be to format the drive in which these softwares were installed. This should help. I know it isn't a good solution but it would help u in not taking ur computer to the technician and would save cash

Well I see that your OS is corrupted already. Solutions that I can say right now.

1. Salvage data by installing it to another computer as a slave. Don't forget to set the jumper.
2. Check disk it on the other computer. You know when right click to the hard disk and then properties then it'll do the check disk protocol.
3 . Reinstall it to your original tower. Again don't forget the jumper

See if it worked. If didn't try to reformat after all you have salvaged your data.
