Does AVAST! compare to commercail Anti-Virus Software

I was about to download Avast! Antivirus for a new computer that I bought. Is there any security concerns about this software? Or does it trade performance for price? (This is Freeware) Is there any known problems with this software?
I would appreciate any answer you have

Been using it for years. Its equal to the best. If you need any help with it theres plenty here that know it well.

I would recommend NOD32 or Kaspersky if you don't mind paying. If you want a free antivirus, I would go with Avira Antivir (free edition).

I hated Avira because it identified several false positives and does not work with certain sites. (Could not print from Flex MLS Real Estate Program. Said printing a listing was malware, could not get out of MLS program.) The free version of Avira does NOT scan e-mail. I uninstalled Avira and went back to Avast. Avast is the best free AV program out there. It is great!

Did you not read my post? I was referring to Avira Premium edition, which DOES scan emails.

Yes I saw your post. But having tried both programs I do prefer Avast.

I too prefer Avast, it updates daily in a matter of a couple of seconds and is more reliable than other free progs I've tried
