Secunia PSI & Flash Player
Howdy. On the advice of experienced members, I downloaded and installed the Secunia Software Inspector. It has reported an out-of-date version of Macromedia Flash Player (v4.x) as well as three instances of an unpatched Flash Player 9.x .

I was wondering if anybody who has experience using the Secunia PSI can let me know if it's generally a good idea to follow the links provided within the application, or whether I should go to the Adobe site and download the latest version of the Flash Player. I can see the path to the end-of-life version of swflash.ocx ("activeX control") and I was wondering if I should remove it, and if so, whether to use the links PSI provides.

I do realize that this is the entire point of having this program, detection and rectification of problem programs, but I'd still feel better hearing a second opinion.

Also, if anyone has any general tips on using this application I'd appreciate the help very much.

Can't help very much I'm afraid because, when I ran it, I was too dumb to work out how to persuade it to stop scanning an old hard drive I have installed which was stuffed with out of date programs! I get a clean bill of health when I run the online scan so I'm happy with that.

As for your other question, I personally would get the new version(s) direct from Adobe. Before doing that you should run the special uninstaller from Adobe, as that is supposed to be the only way to get rid of old versions properly; http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/view...4157&sliceId=1 (There are some specific points for IE users to be aware of in the instructions for using the uninstaller)

If you only use IE you will only need the Active X version of the plugin which, confusingly, has the same version number, and is about the same size as, the version for Firefox, Opera etc. Here's the link for the IE version;http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ (uncheck the Google toolbar unless you want it).

Read the installation instructions carefully, you probably need to be online for the install to complete properly. I can provide a link for the other version if neccessary.

PS. I'm not certain the uninstaller works with old Mactomedia versions, so you may need to do that via Add/Remove

If the "Adobe Flash Player uninstaller" does not remover everything and you do not see it listed in add/remove then Secunia will tell you the file name and where it is at and you can just delete it.

Just reboot after the uninstall and again after the install.
