Xp will only start in Safe Mode
I am new here and really need some help.

I have a major problem with pc. It is an HP pavlion 523. I did install a new hard drive a couple of years ago with success and it has been running great until recently.
DBF took it to do some research. I updated all the antivirus software, security updates, etc. He has not a clue how to do anything except surf the web. He was doing some web-surfing, (places he should NOT have been) and ended up with a virus. Tells me the next day that a window popped up from AVG and he just closed it. Never disinfected the file, quarintined ..NOTHING!

Now the machine will not boot up except in safe mode. I get the XP logo with the blue bar that sits for hours. I ran Windows Live One Care safety scan and it detected 2 viruses and one trojan, but it would not remove them. I tried to do a system restore back to a couple of weeks ago and it just locks up. Ran windows Malicious Software Removal tool and it didn't help
Also tried to run other spware removal and the programs will not open or install.

How can I get this issue resolved? This is my DD14 pc and she has pics and things on there she wants saved. That's another issue, I can't backup files---the disc writer tray will not come out to even put a cd into.

What's a girl to do? Can anyone help with my issues?
thanks in advance.

You could install a new Hard Drive and recover it with your recovery CDs.

Then you can get an adapter.. or a Hard Drive enclosure ..
And you will probably be able to read your personal Data from the corrupt Hard Drive.
