I've been using the AVG Free for months, but recently I've been getting error messages saying that part of the AVG core server has stopped working. I simply tacked it up to the list of error messages I've been getting from my less than year old Vista. My web browser keeps freezing now at least three times daily. Finally I tried to re-install AVG, but to do that I needed to uninstall it which failed several times, each ending with a frozen screen. I tried the AVG site and none of their AVG removal tools worked. I also tried to install it again by itself after the attempted repair failed. I also re-installed Mozilla Firefox which did nothing.
I downloaded Avast thinking that maybe AVG was missing some kind of virus. It runs fine and hasn't detected anything. I still get AVG error messages and my browser won't stop freezing. But it could be something else, like heat, memory, or the drive.
Check for air flow, clear vents, and fans running smoothly.
Try an easy RAM test from a bootable floppy or CD. MemScope (Floppy and CD images.) Roadkil's RAM Test Microsoft Memory Test (floppy or CD ISO image) Memtest86
If you have enough memory sticks, you can test them by removing one at a time and see if the problem disappears.

All it does is "clean up" leftover registry entries that may have been left behind by the installer. | | Registered User with 14 posts. | | | | Quote:

Un-installing AVG is a persisting problem faced by many people in this site, including me. As a desperate ,last-ditch method, i used Revo-uninstaller and succeeded in getting rid of 99% of AVG components. The 1% which remained was because of my fear that i may damage the Registry, because using Revo involves delving deep into the registry! As most of us are registry illeterates(at least self) , i held back.Had i really gone the whole hog i would have succeeded 100%. Kaspersky suite does not allow even a single remnant of a previous A-V and i was left holding an AVG .dll file. I had to go to safe mode and could finally remove that pesky .dll.
If Elvandil's advice does work, your problem is solved, otherwise download Revo Uninstaller from : http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_..._download.html
We will know whether the browser prob.is virus related or not, only after a COMPLETE uninstallation of both AVG and Avast! Kindly get back and tell us all what happened in the next episode! You'll have to do a free virus scan using either Kaspersky,Panda or Trend-Micro. A program may not work again if you use the Windows Cleanup Utility, since the install sources are gone and other valuable registry entries it might require. It will be gone from the Add or Remove programs list because the install entries are gone. You can use the utility to remove installation information for programs that were installed by using Windows Installer. [u]Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall over.[/i] -- Taken straight from the source description at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 | | Junior Member with 29 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2009 Location: My House Experience: Advanced | | Use avira, it's free (google it).. Now you have double trouble. You could not only remove AVG but you have installed another A-V program-Avast, which is not a good move! Anyway I am very confident that Revo Uninstaller will pull you out of this situation! Best wishes and waiting------ | THIS THREAD HAS EXPIRED.
