Help! Bro's computer accessed from outside!
Dear Friends,
My cousin who stays in Bordeaux and takes care of our vineyards has been getting huge bills for internet usage! I asked him to just keep the PC "on" and check the service records the next day, and he was flabbergasted to find out that TEN GB was accounted for on that one day! The KIS2009 pack i bought off-the-shelf contains three licenses, one of which is installed on his machine! Any help is gratefully accepted and will be most useful for my cousin who is distressed!

I suspect your cousin either has an unsecured wireless router being accessed by someone, a cable modem MAC address had been cloned, or ADSL logon user/password has been hacked. Can you tell us more about your cousins internet setup?

I will call up my cousin and tell him to change his user name and password immediately.Thank you bitchey and Frank4d! But i suspect there is more to the eye than i see and as suggested by Frank4d, the other options have to be explored. Any way i think as suggested by "hewee" in one of his posts a "key scrambler " may come in very useful! I have downloaded it and in my personal opinion it REALLY makes a scrambled egg of whatever you key! Awesome! Try the free version from:http://www.qfxsoftware.com/.

Dear Frank4d and Bitchey,
My cousin's PC is a desktop and he has Windows Xp Pro with service pack2 installed. When i visited him last time, as i said before, i installed KIS 2009, MBAM and SAS(free) and when i ran MBAM it found out 29 infections and the PC is slower than a snail and i am almost sure he has a serious malware problem on hand! The infections could be cleared with MBAM and a virus check with KIS2009did not reveal any virus prob. I don't think he's heard of defrafmenting the drives and i installed Auslogics defrag and the defrag of C: drive was at best "partial".

He's also got a HP Laptop and i told him not to transfer any data until he either does a clean re-install or takes a backup onto an extn.Hdd (200Gb) which i made him buy.

Dear Frank4d,
Forgot to mention that he's got an ADSL.

What's the point in taking a backup of an trojan infected data?

Why are you using a key scrambling program? I highly doubt a keylogger is the source of the problem. You haven't described anything about the networking infrastructure in place. Does he use a wireless router? That would be the most obvious source of the problem.

If my computer had a keylogger installed, I wouldn't install a program to thwart it, I'd get it off my system immediately. It seems you're going about this the wrong way.

Here's another angle on this, your cousin's PC is part of a botnet sending out SPAM.
