Lost McAfee
I somehow lost my McAfee and when I tried to download it from Comcast.net the download went through the whole process only to tell me at the end that they could not finalize the download because my JavaScript wasn't functioning. I then went to Adobe and downloaded the lastest flash player. Tried again to download only to be given the same message. Where did I go wrong?

JavaScript isn't actually anything to do with Flash, although both can be browser plugins.

You can check if JS is working in your browser by going to this tester page; http://www.javatester.org/ and clicking on the orange 'JavaScript' box on the left hand side. If everything is OK a box pops up and confirms that JS is working and gives details of the version of JS and the name of your browser.

If Flash is part of your problem, you can doublecheck your version by going here; http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/view...5507&sliceId=2 If your version isn't 10.0.22.87 you will need to update. Although you have already updated your version, if you didn't use the special uninstaller from the Adobe website, the process may not have completed properly.

When I discovered my problem I went to Comcast and talked to their tech service and they are the ones that told me to get JavaScript from Adobe Flash. I go to your sites and pray. Thanks for info. mthumjdo

TOGG, I went to javatester.org/ and got the following message: JavaScript is working in your web browserl Your web browser supports JavaScript 1.8. Your web browser is Firefox version 3.0.8. I went to Internet Explorer (which we use infrequently) and it told me that Internet Explorer 8 does not have JavaScript and needs to be updated. You stated that I should have version 10.0.22.87. Where do I get that?

What other security software do you have installed? Did you try resetting Internet Explorer's security settings to their defaults?

DoubleHelix, McAfee was my only security. I haven't the faintest idea how to reset Internet Security setting. I think that I have some security with Windows or Microsoft

I don't have Internet Explorer 8 installed, but it's probably in the Tools -> Options menu. Look for security and a "Defaults" button.

I'm afraid I can't help with any questions re IE 8 because I don't have it, and I don't use IE 7 either. Checking my version of IE 7 shows that it uses JavaScript version 1.3 and I would have thought IE 8 needed a version of JS as well. My reference to 10, 0,22,87 was to the Adobe Flash player which I only mentioned in case that was what you were being told was needed from Adobe.

In any event, I'm still puzzled by the suggestion that you could get JavaScript from Adobe. JS originally was Netscape software (now Mozilla) and, while it has some similarities to the Sun Java program, it is not the same. Read the first paragraph here;https://developer.mozilla.org/en/About_JavaScript

I have always understood that JS comes ready installed as a 'plugin' in browser software and is not a separately available program, like Sun Java. JS is required by lots of websites and pages, so it is quite possible that Adobe products are compiled with it and/or need it work properly, but I have never seen it offerred as a download by Adobe.

As DoubleHelix said, there are some settings under the Options/Security heading in IE that refer to scripting and, if you have that at 'Default', I would have thought that javascripts should work, Have you tried this download with Firefox or are Comcast insisting that you use IE?

Unhappy Lostg McAfee
TOGG/DoubleHelix, I was able to download JavaScript but I still get the same statement that it is not functioning when I tried to download McAfee. I very rarely use Internet Explorer. I use Mozilla Firefox. Have email through Comcast and utilize Mozilla Firefox for getting my emails. I deleted IE 8 and reinstalled it to see if JavaScript could be obtained from the new download. No change in problem. TOGG I also always used Netscape because I liked its feature and was easier for my wife. I will read the first paragraph of https://developer.mozilla.org/en/About_JavaScript. Maybe an easy way to go is to uninstall Mozilla Firefox and reinstall and check if JavaScript comes along with the reinstallation.

I did as DoubleHelix suggested and no change.

No, Comcast doesn't care what I use for a browser. Sometimes when I/wife want to get information the information can only be gotten by using IE..

When I had McAfee way back when, I remember I had to use IE and the pop-up blocker had to be turned off, so try that.

Also set the security settings for the internet zone to the default. In IE 6 you go to Internet Properties > Security tab, click on Internet, then Default Level > Apply > OK. It might be a little different in IE 8.

JavaScript is a technology browsers use. It's not an add-on or plug-in. It's part of the browser. Maybe you could post the exact text of the error.

Smile Lost McAfee
TOGG/DoubleHelix/Stranley, I finally was able to retrieve McAfee. I finally was able to find a tech at McAfee that was completely knowledgeabe of JavaScript. He had me go to Run and insert the following: recsvr32 jscript.dll. After that was complete I downloaded McAfee with no problem. It did take 6 hours to complete the scan. I want to thank you all for the assistance you all gave me. mthumjdo
