Exclamation Unable to download
I recently reformatted my comp. I'm running xp. Everything seems to work fine except that I can't download. I was able to download the updates from windows update but now I can't remember if I did that before or after I installed Norton I understand it could be a firewall problem, but I have no idea how to fix that and I'm afraid I'll ruin something else if I try on my own

unable to download
No, I turned off windows firewall and norton but I still cannot download.
I also realized that I cannot run scripts and another tech person went through all the IE7 settings with me and still couldn't figure out what it is.
By the way, thanks for answering so soon.

Open your Internet Explorer Options, under the Security tab, click on Custom Level. Make sure downloads are enabled.

Also, make sure Reset custom settings is set to Medium-high (default).

If still no luck, go to Start / Run / type regedit

Navigate to the following registry keys:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\3]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\3]

Check the following DWORD Value Data: (make sure it's set to "0")

Value Name: 1803
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = downloads enabled, 3 = downloads disabled)

If you don't see Value Name: 1803 in the right pane, create it.

If still no joy,

Please download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything.

Did you try everything I've suggested, even the registry check? Any questions?

Did you try running IE7 without the add-ons? To do so, right click the IE7 icon on the desktop and select Run without add-ons (or something like that).

Did you also try to reset IE7? For that, open IE7 Options, under the Advanced tab, click on Reset.

I see you are behind a Linksys router? Try bypassing the router an connect directly to the Internet to see if you can now download. Perhaps you'll have to revise your router's configuration.

Do I just unplug it or is there something else I need to do?

If you know how to configure your router, I would start by doing that. You might have to lower filters. If you don't know how to do it, can somebody else do it for you? If not, the way to unplug it is described as follows:

There is an ethernet cable that comes directly from the modem and plugs into the Router (this cable has the internet, plugging it into the router allows the Router to split the signal and share it).

Unplug the ethernet cable running from your computer to the back of the router.
Unplug the ethernet cable comming directly from the modem to the router and plug it into the back of your computer instead of the router.

Now you have bypassed your router, and your internet is only hooked up to one computer.

I think I may know what the problem is. I access the internet with an Alltel broadband card. I thought I might call them and see what they had to say, They said their broadband is not compatible with certain secure websites. I'm going to keep trouble-shooting it, though, because I tried downloading from several different sites and I don't think they can all be secure. Thank you so much for the help and I think I'm going to hang around this site and learn a little something!
