Question Solved: Zone Alarm 7 port forwarding trouble
To share media with Window Media Player 11 and my XBox 360 I need to open ports.
Fair enough. Yet. ZA seems to be fighting me.
I googled for hours and have found no working solution.

If I disable Zone Alarm, Windows and the XBox find each other no problem, yet if I forward the ports they can't.
Maybe the instructions I found left out vital information.

I need to open;
UDP 1900
TCP 2869
TCP 10243
UDP 10280-10284
For WMP 11 to share media.

I set the protocols for WMP in Zone Alarm with all the ports. ... Nothing.

TSG save me again!.

Are you saying it's that when ports are closed on ZA things are fine, but when you open the ports on it WMP and the Xbox don't work?

No, ZA running at all, the XBox and computer can't find each other.
If I close Zone Alarm, (Bad idea for security reasons) they sync up just fine.

So I'm confident its Zone Alarm, I think I'm just missing something in how to properly forward the ports.

I would think you would be able to solve this with program permissions without having to resort to protocol/port configuration/customization.

Would be a nice hope.... but no.
I gave WMP and the media sharing app full access, with server rights.
With what I thought were open ports, still isn't getting through.

So, either I'm missing a program that needs access, or I'm not opening the ports properly.
Do I add the port numbers to Destination, Source, or both?
The only help I found for ZA forwarding must assume I know, because it never said where.

(pic is of a new rule just for example)

Try adding the ports to both, destination and source.

(First pic)
Tried the same port rule for all 3 programs.
Still nothing.

(second pic)
Do I need to do anything with the source/destination in those boxes as well?

Is that Edit rule page for editing the entry?

yes.
You select "Add" under expert rules, and that's the first page to edit/make the rule. Then you are to click "Modify" under Protocol and list your ports in there. (Just as the pic in post 5 shows.)
So I'm told.

I'm glad ZA makes my computer "invisible" but would it would be nice for my own devices to see it.

I know people before have had to completley uninstall ZA for ports to work. I think it's something with the way they designed the firewall.

Well bummer. Yet great for security I guess.

Thanks for the help.
I'll say solved, but It's not really. I just give up for now.

Thanks E-7, I'll have a look there after I cool down. little fed up with ZA at the moment.

Also a thanks to Blackmirror. Unfortunately I didn't see a solution for using Zone Alarm. Others having my issue, just no way to fix it.

Woot!
At this moment it's working.
Now lets see if I can explain what all I did.
This works on my setup. Cable Modem to Netgear "wired" router. PC is slot ,1 XBox in slot 4.
I didn't set up anything in the router it was all a ZA problem.

OK,
In ZA I have Windows Media Player, Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, and the Network sharing service config all set as trusted.
(see pic 1)
They have Port forward rules as explained in previous posts.

Did the idea found at the top of this page; http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs/...d=93061#M50226
Quote:
Have you tried to do this and see if it helps?
Are the DNS and DHCP servers listed as Trusted in the Zones of the Firewall? Like this?

Make sure your DNS and DHCP server IP's are in your Firewall's Trusted zone. Finding DNS and DCHP servers, etc

1. Go to Run and type in command and hit 'ok', and in the command then type in ipconfig /all then press the enter key. In the returned data list will be a line DNS and DHCP Servers with the IP address(s) listed out to the side. Make sure there is a space between the ipconfig and the /all, and the font is the same (no capitals).
2. In ZA on your machine on the Firewall, open the Zones tab, click Add and then select IP Address. Make sure the Zone is set to Trusted. Add the DNS IP(s) .
3. Click OK and Apply. Then do the same for the DHCP server.
4. The localhost (127.0.0.1) must be listed as Trusted.
5. The Generic Host Process (svchost.exe) as seen in the Zone Alarm's Program's list must have server rights for the Trusted Zone.
Plus it must have both Trusted and Internet Access.
Still didn't see the XBox so I went into the XBox 360's network config.
Added the IP and Subnet Mask numbers to ZA just like the quote had me do with the PC's numbers.
(see pic 2) I didn't know what numbers are dangerous in the public eye so I cleared most of them. Just enter your numbers.

Now, exactly what step worked? Not sure. That is all I did to get it working for me.
My guess is just ports and adding the XBox IP numbers, but I'll let you work that out .

I truly hope this can help someone else get their XBox 360 and WMP 11 working again.
