System Restore and defrag not working.
I've been having lots of trouble with my Windows XP since April 10th. I have no restore points and am unable to use system restore even in safe mode. Also, my defrag says that it can't start. I also have been getting redirected in yahoo and google and have worked with Trend Micro to clear any spyware off of my computer. They have been unable to find anything that is causing this. I was getting the blue screen of death, but that seems to be cleared up.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciate. I've used you in the past and as far as I'm concerned, you guys are the best!

Thanks!

Please download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything.

For System Restore, try these two reg files: #1 and #2. Save them to your desktop and double click on them to merge them to your registry. Try one at the time and reboot.

For defrag: Try this one. Also read this.

I tried each of the reg files, but system restore still is not working. I also saved the defrag file to my desktop and read the file. I am unsure what I'm suppose to do with the downloaded file. Should I extract it to replace? If you could give me a little more info on how to proceed with the defrag file, that would be great. Defrag currently says "cannot start." I checked in my registry and it does say that it is enabled and shows up in all the right places.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, you have to extract it first.

Also read this System Restore Troubleshooter.

Another System Restore Troubleshooter.

I extracted the defrag file and tried to open it, but all it does is flash a black screen that looks like a command screen. Any suggestions?

I haven't tried the file for myself as my computer doesn't have a problem with defrag. But, did you reboot your computer after to see if any changes took place?

Also, have you tried defragging in Safe Mode? What about a third party software like Auslogics Disk Defrag?

'System Restore and defrag not working
I have tried the things that you suggested for System Restore and still am having no luck. I'm attaching a file which shows one of the error screens that I am getting when I try to create a restore point. I can click on the screen that talks about an "F" drive (my drive is "C" which system restore settings is set to work off of). Once I click on the error screen, I click next and the screen never changes.

Also, I have service pack 3 for windows. Could that be a problem?

Thanks for your help.

I have tried the sfc /scnnow feature and it asks for the xp cd. I inserted my cd, but it says it is not valid. I'm guessing that it is because it's been upgraded to sp3. Anyway, I tried the work around suggested in the article and my i386 is on my hard drive and all my regedit files are pointing to c:\ so I'm not sure what to try now. Any suggestions?
