Comodo now has over 4 million Malware signatures
The Comodo Antivirus database has today exceeded 4,000,000 signatures and is still growing very fast:

Four million of anything is an impressive number but I am not sure that, in itself, it says anything about the efficiency of this or any other AV program.

I remember when I was using NAV 2000 on Win 95/98, Symantec claimed what was then an impressive number of definitions in their database and only in the small print could you see that something like a quarter of them were for MBR viruses spread by infected floppies!

Based on numerous articles I have seen over the last year or so, it would seem that signature based detection is now of secondary importance because of the sophistication of modern threats. Security programs must also use behavioural analysis, such as heuristics, to try and prevent infection, which, in turn, may increase false positives.

There have been very few comparative tests of the Comodo Antivirus component, as it is only 6 months since the program was first released. There is a recent one here:
http://malwareresearchgroup.com/?page_id=2

When this test was carried out the database had over one million fewer signatures.

For Comodo the antivirus is not such an important part of their protection, as they are far more focused on prevention.

It has been said that the HIPS component is too difficult for beginners, but in the latest version 3.9 of Comodo Internet Security there are very few demands on the user. This version is now at release candidate stage and should be released for general use very soon now.

Of course the great thing about this program is that it is free for everyone.
