Solved: Netstat report, is this a problem?
I've been talking to the Sky broadband help team trying to get my connection speed up & they got me to open a command window and run 'netstat'. The result is shown in the attachment.
According to Sky, netstat should report no more than 10 lines but on my PC it comes back with 25-30 lines, is this a problem & does anyone know what these entries mean?
Looking at the last entries, the Mozilla one must be to do with Thunderbird but if I look up WWW2-1.optistat.com it leads somewhere called EMS Charts which seems to be a company selling medical data logging software. Theplanet.com is just a hosting site. The localhost entries mean nothing to me.
I'd be very interested to hear what others get if they run a netstat report.

Must be a broadband command.
Won't work or run on my cable connection.
Looks like it starts, then blinks out inside of 1 second with no report.

Let's try a better report. TCPVIEW shows the same information, but also shows the process names for each TCP and UDP connection. You can download TCPVIEW from Microsoft here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb897437.aspx

That will help us see why you have so many TCP connections established at once.

TCPview gives a lot more entries, does this give you any clues?

I don't think there is a magic number for TCP connections as your ISP told you, but I can see why you have so many TCP connections:

Kservice looks like Delivery Manager (a download manager) supplied by Sky Broadband. So it is going to run when your Internet Explorer is running (or maybe it always runs) . Thunderbird.exe is your email client.

Tbkern32.exe and Tbmux32.exe are related to Transbase/CD Database System. Not sure what that is.

Java.exe is probably running because of one or more of the above.

A few Google results indicate Tbkern32.exe, Tbmux32.exe and Kservice.exe are resource hogs and probably aren't needed.

We may be able to help you trim down your startup program list if you post a HijackThis log.

Should I post the Hijack log here or start a new post in the Malware & Hijack forum?

I don't suspect Malware so don't post it there. Here is better for your slow Internet problem.

The Transbase/CD Database System seems to be related to vehicle database & catalogue programmes, I have a few of those type programmes installed.

Here's the HijackThis log, I hope it gives some useful information. It may be worth mentioning that my PC sometimes hangs on startup & needs a reboot or 2 before it starts properly. Otherwise it seems to run OK.

Trying to determine what is safe to disable...

Do you know what "ProQuest Business Solutions" (now Snap-On) is? Possibly work related?

Sorry for the delay, I had to go out for a short while. ProQuest Business Solutions seems to be associated with Snap-on tools so I'm guessing that this is connected with one of the vehicle diagnostics programmes I have installed.

There are a lot of startup items that you can probably do without, but let's start with the ones that are causing all the TCP connections since Sky Broadband apparently thinks you have too many.

To launch MSCONFIG go to Start, Run, and type msconfig in the box then OK. In msconfig click the Services tab.

If you don't know what the "ProQuest Business Solutions" software is or don't need it running all the type you can disable it from running by unchecking the following entries:
pqeauto.database.dbmonitor
pqeauto.energy.mappermonitor
pqeauto.engine.tomcatmonitor

Kservice is a download manager installed by Sky Broadband. They thought you should have it but you probably don't need it. Uncheck it to disable the service.

Then move to the Startup tab in MSCONFIG.

"NielsenOnline.exe" monitors your web surfing habits and may display ads. Probably not something you installed intentionally. Uncheck NielsenOnline to disable it from starting.

When done click OK, then Restart. The first time you restart a popup will inform you the Windows is running in selective startup mode. You can check the box for don't show me this again. You won't see the popup on subsequent boots.

If you don't like the changes that were made, they can be un-done by running msconfig and rchecking the boxes that were unchecked.

MSCONFIG can be used to disable other startup items. For example, do you really need Real Player or your HP printer to check for updates everytime you start your computer?

OK, I've done that. I've left NielsonOnline running, their software has been on my PC for several years & they award me monthly points which can be exchanged for some quite generous gifts.
You are right, I don't need Real or HP to check for updates, but I have left them for now.

I didn't see that before my next post, so may want to modify my instructions. Instead of disabling the "ProQuest Business Solutions" items in MSCONFIG, it might be better to change their startup behavior.

To do that go to Start, Run and type services.msc in the Run box. In the Services window, change the startup type for the three ProQuest Business Solutions from "Automatic" to "Manual".

That will allow them to run when needed, but not run automatically everytime you start your PC.

If the above did not have any effect on your intenet connection, it may be something unrelated to what Sky Broadband was concerned with. In that case I would recommend you click the "Report" button in your post and ask a Moderator to move this thread to the Networking forum.

I couldn't see how to make them manual but I think they will be OK disabled as I don't use the online facilities in these programmes.
I just ran netstat again & now have 10 entries, 7 'localhost', 2 'opistat.com & 1 'google'.
