Question Solved: Can't connect to all websites & google ads don't display.
Windows XP Professional - Version 2002 Service Pack 3 - Using IE7

I can't click through to all web-sites or see google ads on this computer - not with firefox either, so it must be the computer blocking somehow but I can't find how, so can someone help please.

I receive the error 'The Webpage cannot be found' then to the right hand side there is 'HTTP 404'

I have javascript enabled so it isn't that - can anyone help me find what is wrong please. I can see google ads and the websites on other computers ok.

I have had this error for a long time and spent many hours trying to find out why and just continually go round in circles. For work, I need to be able to see google ads and to click through to all web-sites that I wish to view and this is making it very difficult for me!

Hope someone can help technically please.

Can you ping Google?

Can you reach Google with this address: http://74.125.93.104/?

Refresh your DNS (Some Times negative DNS may give Errors to specific sites)

By following these steps:

Start >>Run>> cmd >> ipconfig /release

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /renew

Click Start, then Run and type CMD in the dialogue box that appears, and then click OK. Type netsh winsock reset into the DOS window that appears.

Also, try to edit your Hosts file. It's located in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc.

Once you have found your HOSTS file, right-click on the HOSTS file, and then select Open. You will be asked to choose a program to use. Select Notepad, but make sure that you do NOT turn on any option to always use the same program.
Examine the content of your HOSTS file, and compare it to the screenshot below. We do not need to worry about any line that begins with an # because is ignored by Windows. Also, the line "127.0.0.1 localhost" can be safely ignored, because it is a standard entry.

A HOSTS file can be used to control Web page to IP address associations

Anything else that appears in your HOSTS file without an # at the beginning, apart from the "127.0.0.1 localhost" line, should be viewed with suspicion when we are trying to diagnose the cause of "Page cannot be displayed" errors. The quickest way to test for HOSTS file involvement is to right click the HOSTS file, then select Rename. Add the letter X to the beginning or end of the file name and then ok your changes. By changing the name of the HOSTS file, we stop Internet Explorer from using it, and therefore resolve any issues caused by the file.

If still no luck,

Please download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything.

Can't connect to all websites & google ads don't display
Hi,

First of all I could see google through the IP address you sent and then I went on to implement the changes to the DNS but that didn't correct the problem, so I found my host file and put an x at the beginning as suggested for a quick test for HOSTS file involvement and I can now see google ads. However, there is such a lot of things in the Host file and I am very unsure what to delete - it looks to me that perhaps all of it should be deleted from 127.0.0.1 rond.starsdoor.com downwards - I have pasted the first lot of addresses for you to take a look at as some of them have a # after them (are they the ones that should be left on, or should I delete those too?) they are below my name

I have yet to check if I can click through to websites I couldn't get through to before and will let you know. Meanwhile if you could confirm above please as I don't want to do anything wrong.

Kind regards
Brenda

Well, that's not normal.

Read this.

Go to Start / Run / type msconfig

Under the Startup tab, locate the entry for KHost.exe and uncheck the box.

Under the Services tab, you should also uncheck KSERVICE.EXE.

All this is related to Kontiki.

Hi,

I have done the above and had to restart the computer, it came up with a box that said 'You have used the System Configuration Utlity to make changes to the way windows starts. The system configuration utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective StartUp mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run everytime Windows start. Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start windows normally & undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility'

Well, I thought I shouldn't undo what I had done, so I left it in selective start up so the changes weren't undone - was that correct?

Don't mind that annoying box and just get rid of it. It will appear every time you change something in the Startup list and reboot.

Can't connect to all websites & google ads don't display
Hi,

Thank you. I can see websites I couldn't see before and I have google ads. However, I don't know what to do about the Host file. Do I leave the 'x' in front of it and do I need to delete the files 127.0.0.1 etc. below ? Or do I leave it as it is?

Kind regards
Brenda

I'm not sure if you should remove the "X". The entries in the hosts file might have been put there by Kontiki. If you still need Kontiki, I would leave the "X" there to make sure you won't get the same issue again. As long as the "X" is there, IE won't bother with the hosts file.

Hi,

I'll take your advice thank you but will I need to tick the boxes again each time I want to watch a video or will it click through from my desktop icon? I watch videos often for internet marketing too!

Anyway, thank you so much for your help. This was a very long lasting problem that no one seemed to be able to help me with but you have, so thanks a million for your quick responses and for your help!

Kind regards
Brenda

As this link says, you should be able to simply click on the desktop icon to use Kontiki.

Note: if you observe all the entries in your hosts file, you'll notice they mostly refer to adware. That's why you couldn't access a lot of websites and Google ads.
