Solved: Dell Firewall & Spyware
I'm trying to help a friend who knows less about computers than I do, if that's possible. My friend has a Dell desktop, Dimension 3000 using Windows XP Home and ISP is Bellsouth DSL Lite. After 8 months, Bellsouth determined their Motorola modem was probably defective as could not connect to Internet. A relacement Motorola modem was sent & installed but still no connect to Internet. After much diagnostics using the address bar & typing in, 192.168.1.1.254 the bellsouth tech support said that Dell's Firewall and Spyware had to be uninstalled.
How do we do that?? This novice needs detailed instructions. Thanks. John

Sounds like they are clueless as Dell does not have firewalls or spyware however what is your antivirus program and version? Do you have an antispyware program and if so what is it? All programs can be uninstalled in Add/Remove Programs in Control panel incidentally.

Dell Firewall & Spyware
Thanks for reply, Rich-M. I don't presently know the answers to your questions and will have to wait until I can get back to my friend's house and check the computer. While there I'll go to Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs and uninstall them, if there. When uninstalled, then Bellsouth Tech Support said to get back to them and see if they can finally get an Internet connection. The tech support associate even had us in Safe Mode and entered the code 192.168.1.1.254 in the top address bar but no luck, still....Windows Explorer cannot connect to the Internet...also....Invalid Code.
I will let you know our progress as soon as I can. Thanks again - do appreciate! John

Are you sure you're following Bell South's instructions properly? Or did you just mistype the information here? 192.168.1.1.254 is not a valid IP address. It's one too many ".1"'s. Did you type or mean 192.168.1.254?

192.168.1.1 is probably your router's IP address as known to your PC.

Dell Firewall & Spyware
Thanks DoubleHelix. This 82 year old memory is slipping. It probably is only one 1, and yes, we did read back our typing entries each time to the Bellsouth techie for verification and they were satisfied that we entered correctly. I'll be posting my follow up information ASAP. My friend has a very sick spouse and there is only limited visiting time between Visiting Nurses & Aides, etc. Thanks again. John

Dell Firewall & Spyware
My friend NOW has an Internet connection! Another friend of my friend knows someone who is very computer savvy and after spending 2 hours, fixed the problem. I probably will never know what was wrong and how it was fixed, but if I ever get the information I will be sure to post it.
Again, thanks to all for your help. John
