How to Use WinPatrol Properly?
I just downloaded WinPatrol and I'm not sure what to do when it sends a Pop-Up.

It keeps sending one that says something like the computer wants to change from WMP to Real Player. When I click no another 3 immediately Pop-Up. This has happened 3 times tonight.

I've just been saying no to all because I don't want to allow any changes since I don't know why it's asking for these changes.

How do I know when to say yes to a change?

Thanks!

First off WinPatrol is great to have and any tab you can click the Help in the top right corner and get more info and it will have a link More WinPatrol Features you can click on.
Note: these files are on your computer with the default install.

What your seeing is the great part about WinPatrol because nothing new gets added or changed without you OK.

If Real Player is a new program then it is adding things and asking you what you want to do. If you never installed Real Player thebn says No but find find out how Real Player on on your Computer.
Guess you had it or wanted Real Player and Real Player want to play a file type that WMP was playing so you can say OK if you want those changes.
If you do not then say NO like you have.
But now you got to find out why it keeps asking.
Real Player may have setting to no start up at bootup or not to take over all file types etc. You could have Real Player loading something else at bootup that is not needed and that is what is making this here you see keep asking.

So if Real Player is something you want and it is asking to let Real Player play the mp3 and other file types say yes if you want Real Player to play those file types.

Now to me and a lot of others Real Player is Spyware and has been that way a very long time.

RealPlayer named spyware by StopBadware.org

What is great about WinPatrol is the alerts. Most every Alert if you keep your PC clean should be on installing and changes you have made so in most cases like that it is OK to give it rights because they are changes you should know about.
Upgrades of software alway read the EULA and make sure no toolbar is added and more and more programs are adding the junk so then WinPatrol alert can help up out some and let you say No.
If you got the Plus version you can look up the Plus Info on anything also.

OK - This is what I've been getting all night every 15 minutes and I'm not even at the computer - (in order Document, Document 1, Document 2, Document 3.)
My attachments didn't take - let me see why.

I don't know what it did but now Hulu won't play at all (that's what I was watching when it first happened.)
I uninstalled WinPatrol and did a system restore but it still won't play now.

Dear cycler,
hewee is spot on! Real Player is a leech. I have bought (one year back) Real Player11+, but i have decided to not use it as it IS "Spyware"! It is sitting idle, and not on the desktop. The Problem with such softwares is first they directly prompt "Scotty", and if you refuse, will use other programs to repeatedly prompt you, till out of sheer disgust, you okay the change!

WinPartol is one of the best freeware security softwares,i have come across. When you buy a new Mobile telephone, you are advised to read the "user manual" to perfectly make full use of it's potential. The same is the case with WinPatrol! The "Help" section will be most useful, i suggest you kindly read it, and you will be rewarded!

PS: Btw, don't you like Winamp? Unless you have Vista (compatibility issues), with Xp it jells well and is a fantastic listening experience and matches the best out there!(Sorry, i did'nt see your Comp.Specs)

WinPatrol had nothing to do with the trouble and only alerted you to changes so you can say no. But you had Real Player and it never plays nice so will want to take over.

I would install WinPatrol again. Uninstall Real Player and who know what else it installed.

What Scotty was telling you was only on that Real Player wants to take over a file type that another program was playing before.
So nothing really bad there at all. But the Real Player is spyware so there are still bad things about the program.

I did what you said and I uninstalled Real Player and all of the associated files. I only had it because one NPR show was only available using it but now they use something else I think so I never used it.
I will re-install WinPatrol.
I just get worried when I've installed something new and then something that was working perfectly doesn't work so of course I think that it's the new software.
Thanks!

Dear cycler,

Since you have Xp OS, installing and using Winamp should be a breeze! Winamp is an mp3 and video(DVD) player and an excellent one at that! There are some die-hard fans ( self, included) of Winamp, who will never compromise with any other player, because of it's high-quality audio and video features! I am providing a link below which will take you directly to the original web site of Winamp for a free download.

If you'd like to get rid of the alert there's one easy way.

There's a checkbox on the options screen that says "Lock File Types".
That way Scotty will automatically keep your original file type associations and not bother you.
WinPatrol will only however lock down those file types you list on the File Types tab. So if there are file types you don't care about you can remove them from the list under the File Type tab.

Dear cycler,
I suggest you not take the route suggested! Locking down files" is one headache and unlocking them is another! Now, the basic function of WinPatrol is to alert you reg. any changes in your files and if you take away that function,"Scotty" will be a dog which can neither bark nor bite!

There are still plenty of other features that make it worth having it installed.

Dear Sniper,
I have to bow before your experience! Instead, cycler can install a small and free tool to UNLOCK (sorry for the bold type) any file! Download site: http://www.freewarezoom.com/archives/lockhunter

I found LockHunter very useful,btw!
