Tracking Site Histories...
Hello,

I need to verify that a relative is not misusing my computer and the site they said they wanted to go to is not listed in my IE history list.

Can I do something to make sure that everything is okay without violating their privacy? Is there is a list of sites which don't show up in IE, no matter what?

Ideally, I would like to confirm that they went where they said they did without my having to see the details.

I'm not talking Net Nanny level stuff here, they are an adult and so age-appropriate material listings are not what is at issue, only my system security.

Thanks- CJ

Dear CheapJeep,
Can you kindly clarify who"they" are and what's actually happening with more clarity? I, for one am at a loss to clearly understand!

They are a close relative and out of the blue, they said they needed to use my machine to check on their bank account before we left to go do something for which they had already withdrawn funds.

Which seems strange since I would never check my bank account from even a relative's computer on the spur of the moment when I could stop by any ATM for a free receipt listing and they had the 'guilty face' expression of a child unwilling to explain themselves.

We have had problems over the security of my machine before and as they didn't want me in the room, I don't want to now play 20 questions worth of head games as to why they didn't go where they said they went.

The problem is that I am only working from a general awareness of a 2hr window which I have already checked IE's history of after we got back. _Nothing_ shows up in my index for the period I know they were online. Which is strange because I can go to my bank it shows up perfectly legitimately, right away.

Maybe I should just let it drop but it irritates me being gulled by someone I should trust and yet seeing right there the proof of a lie that they were not doing what they said they needed to with my system.

Srprashant,

No, IE7. If I upgrade will it give me more complete history tracking in the past tense?

Thanks- CJ

Im so sorry, I wanted to know if you use IE8, because it has this feature called in-private browsing with which you conceal your browsing activities.
You have to wait for better advice

How do you know they even used the web browser? They could have done anything on the computer when you were out of the room. There isn't a program out there that will tell you exactly what they clicked on, ran, opened, or did during that period of time.

Dear Cheap Jeep,
If they have used your IE7, there may be a way of tracking the sites they visited!

The index.dat files will usually have IE's history even after using the "Tools" option. They might look a mess but opening them with something like
»http://www.safer-networking.org/en/f...zer/index.html
& clicking on "URLs" will parse out any visited websites. It's usually meant for advanced users, and you can post the results in this forum for analysis by the Pros we have !

They could of even use a web browser from a flash drive but if you checked everything and got nothing do search for index.dat run from a Admin account and make sure to unhide hidden files.

FileAlyzer that perfume post link to is good but windows still will not let you see some index.dat files so then get something like Index.dat Suite.

You could try to set a camera behind where they would sit and record the screen so you could see what they are doing.

Dear Jason08,
But his relatives appear to be crafty enough to ensure that he is out of the house before they start the funny business! I think the O.P is too nice a person to turn them away at the gate or door, without undergoing all this turmoil! Do you call them real relatives who are bleeding him/her dry? I think he/she should install a user name and password to open the OS and start operating it!
