Solved: %systemroot%\......
Good morning everyone...

Turned on computer this AM (Dell-windows xp)..it automatically scanned with Avira, but then THIS popped up with my WinPatrol program

"A new auto startup Program has been detected. yada yada..Do you approve the addition of this program startup setting?" yes or no
%systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

Another window also appeared below this one, from microsoft, stating that my system has recovered from a serious error.

What on earth is this, and most importantly...what needs to be done about it???

Thanx a bunch, guys.

Good morning!

Did you install a new program yesterday before shutting down your computer?

The only thing that went on the computer yesterday was a download for Java. I was looking for some online puzzles/crosswords that type thing, for my 9 year old, who was home yesterday from school...feeling a little under the weather and bored.

You could try the following:

Click on Start, Run, type msconfig.

Under the Startup tab, locate anything related to Java, like "jushed" for example and uncheck it.

Reboot and see if the error message comes back.

there is nothing at all in the startup tab except the problem that I typed earlier...
startup item: a checked box that says dumprep 0 - k
command: %systemroot%\system.....
location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVer.....

Ok, so it was only an update for Java? You did have a previous version on your computer and you had unchecked the application in the Startup list before, right?

This file %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k is normal to be created when you recover from a serious error.

I guess it was an update...couldn't find it on my computer...the little icon disappeared somewhere...which is why I downloaded it again. In winpatrol the java application is listed as "disabled" in the startup programs.

I guess then, I should check "yes" in the winpatrol box to "approve the additon of this program startup setting" as "this program is expected and acceptable." ?????

Hi Winpatrol notes any changes to the Registry hence the dumprep 0 - k.
You do not need Java running at startup>but this time say Yes to Winpatrol.

You can always uncheck Java later.
