Which virus software is best?
I have a 5 year old desktop computer that runs windows XP and for some reason it attracts viruses like a magnet and no virus software seems to be able to help.

Norton has been used on the computer with no success, it seemed to slow the computer down more than it helped and the only reason it did anything is because it disconnected the computer from the internet so you couldn't use it.
It currently has McAffee Viruscan Enterprise 8.5

Does anyone have any suggestions on what virus software I can run that would work better?

Thank you,

Here is the one that I use, after using many others.
I have been using it for 3 years now and I think it's done a great job.It has a very small footprint and won't slow your machine down.I just set up a schedule for a deep scan once a week and I have it check for vulnerability's every day.
I highly recommend it.

I recommend ESET Smart Security (NOD32 antivirus + firewall + anti-spyware -> my personal favorite!), Kaspersky Internet Security and BitDefender.

Kaspersky internet security is the best according to me. I have been using this for quite some time and my computer has never been attacked by major threats. I am really happy!

Kaspersky is a great antivirus but as I remember the scans are endless and it insists on doing a scan at bootup you cannot control which is senseless.

Dear Rich-M
scan at bootup? Which version of KIS are you using?
I haven't experienced this.

It was several years ago when I tested for another forum and I believe 6.0.

Use AVIRA (free) or Kaspersky (not free). Kaspersky's total internet security is very good. It has a good firewall.

avira.com 5*****

nod/kaspersky/avast/avg also good ratings.
Make sure you click the right quarantine/fix/repair options in any package.

If already infected, go to malware/hijack this forum on this site.

Even I would suggest Nod32. Eset NOD32 is the lightest Anivirus Software and its main characteristic is that it is one of the lightest and is efficientcy in removing all types of virus.

I have not used a lot of the programs the others are talking about... but i do know this... Stay away from McAfee, Nortan, or any major AV company that does a lot of corp. stuff. I am not saying they are bad, but they are some of the most used AV programs. When people are trying to write code for a virus they try to find holes and weakness. They're 100s of AV programs out there, so most hacker won't take the time to research all of them to find their weaknesses, they will go after what is used the most. Like I said, i'm not trying to say which is better, but picking an AV that come preinstalled on most new computers (ie dell, hp etc) you are just making yourself a bigger target.
