My laptop can't handle the security programs
Hello,

I have a Dell laptop (Inspiron 5150) RAM: 256.... probably considered to be very old by now. Well, I installed Avast, SuperAntiSpy, Spyware Blaster, SpyBot and CCleaner as suggested by a self-prescribed expert. This caused my computer to take an eternal time to start, low virtual memory, in general very slow performance. Once I removed all of these programs, its performance improved significantly but now I have no safeguard against whatever is out there! Please can someone suggest a site or program(s) that will not cause so many problems without upgrading my laptop.

Thank You

First of all, 256 Mb of RAM is not enough. You'll always run into trouble and applications will lag a lot.

Keep you Startup list to a minimum and only run your antivirus and firewall in real-time protection.

If you want a faster and more effective security alternative, I would recommend ESET Smart Security. It's fast, light and uses less system resources than most of the other security programs out there.

If you want, you can post a HijackThis log and we can help you trim down your Startup list and running processes.

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

Click on Start, Run, type msconfig.

Under the Startup tab, locate and uncheck the following entries, you don't need them at startup nor running in the background to slow things down:

NvCplDaemon

nwiz

Dell QuickSet

WD Button Manager (can be kept if really needed)

IntelliPoint (can be kept if really needed)

TkBellExe

SunJavaUpdateSched (jusched)

MSMSGS

Adobe Reader

Microsoft Office

QuickBooks Update Agent

QuickTime Task

iTunesHelper

You can also uninstall your IE6 toolbars.
