Hello All,

I have anybody had any problem with AVG 8.5 ? I had AVG 7.5 until all the updates had expired. Then I upgraded to 8.5 and my system seem to slow down. I'm using XP-Home SP-2.

I have read on different forums that AvastAV FREE.

I'm debating between what 2 to install ?

Any help or comments are appreciated.

Avast AntiVirus is the best. Go about installing it without any fear. Quite a few of us on TSG recommend Avast.
AVG is in complete doldrums. They seem to have been carried away by the success of their earlier versions .

Hmm...Your choice depends on how much usage you put your computer to. For computers with 512 MB RAM, AVG 8.5 can be a good choice, because Avast has a lot of user complaints about being a memory hog. But Avast can be a good choice for users with over 1 GB of RAM.

Personally the only free one I find effective at malware prevention is Avira.

Thanks all for all the comments,
When I had AVG 7.5 install, my PC booted up pretty fast. Now with AVG 8.5, the boot time is around 35-40 seconds. I've done the "msconfig" to have only my firewall (zone alarm, be using it for years) to start up.
I know that AVG 8.5 is a "resource hog".

I just debating on weather to install AVG 8.5 and go with Avast AntiVirus. I have 1 GB of RAM installed.

Still I ponder !!

I wholly agree. Why don't you try Avira instead?Some of my friends use it, and find it extremely light and effective, infact, so much, that you'll not feel that you have an antivirus at all!

Avira is better than Avast and AVG both.
However, a word of caution.
My friend had the Avira free installed, malware managed to sneak into his computer and it became tremendously slow.

Hmm..Virus definitions mostly do not contain malware definitions. It would be sensible to add an anti malware software to the security kit. I would recommend malwarebytes anti malware.

This might not be the case only with Avira. NO Antivirus offers 100% protection. Nothing is immaculate

They do if not 100% but atleast 98%.
I am a heavy downloader and I download a lot of junk, my download would easily exceed 3-4 gigs a month. My kaspersky internet security 2009 has protected me, there hasnt been a trace of viruses or other junk for almost 4-5 months since I installed it.

You have a point there, but user reviews for Avira are good. Anyways, for someone considering AVG, Avira is obviously a better option, though there might be better AVs which are paid for. Avira is surely the best free AV out there.

I use ESET Nod32, and I have no qualms about it. I used BitDefender before, but I thought it had a lot of bugs, though the user interface was one among the best. I have no plans to switch to any other AV as of now, coz I find Nod32 is one among the top AVs there, and it isnt bothering me much.

BitDefender is hungry for resources, thats what I have heard. As of now I am waiting for Kaspersky Internet Security 2010.

In my experience both Bit Defender and Kaspersky are excellent. As I remember Bit Defender does have frequent bugs as mentioned and they both have unbearabley long scans while Nod32 has the fastest in the industry. They both protect against spyware "at the gate" as well as does Avira incidentally with the newest version.
