Solved: Online Armor...or not
Last week, after a marathon 5 HOUR support session with an outsourced Norton Expert, I decided to dump 360 and go with something that demanded less of my resources. I installed Avast, which seems to be working just fine, and then tried Online Armor.

The installation went fine and I was prepared to be happy with my newly invigorated computer. Then I allowed it to restart and go into "learning mode". Big mistake.

It rebooted, but that's about all. The familiar desk top picture was there but no icons. I tried two more time and still nothing, so I rebooted into safe mode and chose the last configuration that worked. Thankfully it did, but after two more attempts with the same results, I'm going to try for some advice here before making another attempt.

What am I doing wrong. I know it has to be me because software is NEVER buggy and always works the first time. Could it have something to do with Avast? I told it to trust whatever was on the computer. Was that a mistake?

I don't want to go back to Norton. He's mean to me and makes my life miserable.

Firewalls are notorious for leaving debris behind that other firewall stumble over on their installation. I'll bet you have fragments of Norton laying around.

Please note that if you are a new Online Armor user and you uninstalled another firewall prior to installing Online Armor, then it is also very possible that the previous firewall left components behind when it was uninstalled. This is very common among security software, and those components can cause any number of issues, sometimes just as much as if the full program was uninstalled. So if you have uninstalled another firewall previously, it is strongly recommended that you look for an uninstall/removal utility or instructions on cleaning up after an uninstall for that program - these things have ended a lot of nightmares for people new to Online Armor and other security software.

MICHAELM6,
AKAJohnDoe and hewee are right. Just go to the search box and scroll down and click on the search companion(the friendly doggie). Zoom down on "files and folders".Type "Norton"(without the quotes,of course) and wait.

You will most probably get all the places where Norton has clawed in, and right-clicking on each item will take you to the destination folder or file and remove it from there. Be careful with program files and WINDOWS. Best wishes!Restart and see.

You know a couple months back I seen posted here or another forum a list or a link to a site that had a list with the links to all these Anti-Virus, Firewalls etc and the uninstaller and or cleanup uninstallers.

But even doing a uninstall on programs like this always reboot more then once. 1st reboot can be deleting things so your want a 2 reboot where all should be OK.

That's what I do as well I always reboot twice.

Also I saw that page somewhere too with all those uninstallers and now thanks to you I'm looking all over trying to find it.

But since I can't find it then it sounds like a nice addition to the library.

OK I found this here.
Uninstallers (removal tools) for common antivirus software

Comprehensive List of Uninstallers or Removal Tools for Antivirus Software

Maybe it was that first one I seen and there was not one for the firewall but I am not sure now. I do remember it listed many uninstallers.

Wait here is the one I seen before. Ultimate Collection of Uninstallers / Removal Tools for All Popular Anti-Virus Software

I think the one I saw was a post on a forum with the links to the uninstallers.

But those sites look useful too, Thanks.

I think it may of been to the sites also but I know I seen that one.

Now those are not the firewall ones either that I was looking for. I found the Antivirus Software uninstallers so you can find the Firewall uninstallers.

Thanks to all who responded. The Norton removal tool worked and all is well. Sadly, it doesn't seem to work on machines infected...running with Vista. Why does it work on one and not the other?

Oh sure take the easy one There seems to be more uninstallers/info for uninstalling Antivirus software than Firewalls.

I still didn't find the one I think I saw (which may or may not exist...) but I did find this while searching http://forums.techarena.in/guides-tutorials/1016800.htm it doesn't necessarily link to uninstallers but it links to info on how to uninstall Antivirus or Firewalls.

EDIT: - I found his one http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=233421 which might be the one I was thinking of but I see it only lists uninstallers for Antivirus programs.
