Smile Windows Firewall
Recently when I boot my laptop the firewall takes an extra few minutes to turn on. Initially I get a message that my computer may be at risk and to go to control panel and turn on the firewall manually. Then, I've noticed if I wait a little longer it eventually clicks on. This is new and annoying. Any ideas on what's going on and if its worth trying to correct? Thanks for the help. Chuck

Do some research on the software firewall out there. Find the one that you feel would be best for your security needs, installed it, and turn off windows firewall forever.

Do you have another firewall from a security sofware bundle like Norton for example?

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

Your problem might be as simple as the fact that you have way too many Startup applications loading with Windows and delaying your Windows Firewall.

Click on Start, Run and type msconfig.

Under the Startup tab, uncheck all unnecessary entries. Use this website to help you decide which applications to keep or uncheck. Simply copy and paste the .exe files found at the end of each 04 line of your HJT log.

Thanks for the help. I'm unfamiliar with this site. When I enter the file name where is says search by file or name not much happens. Where am I going wrong? Will it tell me yes, no, delete file, I'm not sure what to look for. Do I enter each file separately or can I enter all at once? Thanks

Is this in the HJT program or the startup list website?

Ok, I'm not sure if I'm on the right track. The site you recommended asked me to install a registry booster from Microsoft. I installed it and it found over 700 errors. Then it asked for me to purchase the full program so I cancelled out. I just hope this didn't screw up my computer any further.

Actually, all you have to do to see what startup items are needed is by clicking on the letters just below where it says to Click for a free scan.

Look at the attached picture. It's pretty simple. Enter the .exe file in the bar.

Just completed cleaning up startup files. Rebooted and still getting the same message regarding the firewall and the delay with it opening. Please advise. Thanks.
