This is very important for all others too, because we will one day find ourselves in the same predicament as to whether it's a full virus code (and needs to be dealt with) or as Elvandil pointed out a small tag of a virus code!
.
I'm not sure I follow. I believe Elvandil and I were talking about excluding files or folders from processing vs configuring the anti-virus app to not scan for a particular virus/trojan/other.

Elvandil is right that AntiVir makes it very easy to exclude a file or folder from processing where AVG doesn't make it so easy to do so. I just wasn't aware of this difference until Elvandil mentioned it.

Peace...

Dear tombkat,
I was talking about "configuring the A-V to not scan for a particular virus/Trojan/other". Thank u.

Ok. Well, your reply to my post on the previous page about my not having to configure AVG to _not_ scan something was referring to configuring AVG to skip a particular file or folder from scanning, not from looking for a particular kind of malware or virus.

AVG does have the capability to let users define which "Potentially Unwanted Programs" (PUPS) a user might want AVG to skip, but I think this is different from the file/folder exclusion configuration Elvandil and I were discussing.

Or did I miss something someone posted about configuring an anti-virus app to not look for a particular virus or other malware?

Peace...

Dear tomdkat,
I was (all along) asking only for clarification as to where does an "average(sorry to use that word) guy, stand when his A-V detects something like the one in your friend's pc. I never referred to excluding files and folders from scanning.

By the way, here we are talking( in this forum) that McAfee has not been what it was once, whereas the international sales figures for McAfee are the highest compared to any other A-V for 2008-09.

Well, I would think if someone got infected, as my friend's PC did, they should seek assistance from a trained and knowledgeable party to remove the infection. Since you are aware of this forum, if you got infected I would recommend starting a thread in the malware removal forum.

A number of people call local computer repair shops, Geek Squad, or seek the assistance of friends (how I normally get involved in these kinds of things). I think the biggest problems tend to arise with the "average" person tries to remove the infection, themselves, based solely on web search results containing information they don't fully understand.

The company I work for standardized on a corporate edition of a McAfee security suite of some kind. Are those international sales numbers including corporate and home users or do they focus on home users?

Peace...

Ok, here is the ComboFix log and attached are the MalwareBytes logs.

I ran MalwareBytes *before* running ComboFix since I didn't run ComboFix until you mentioned it above. I started this thread long after "Personal Antivirus" was removed by MalwareBytes.

Hi,

The ComboFix log, although not easily readable was not the one that shows any detected malware, I am pretty sure that there was one run that did, since I can see a ComboFix Quarantined files log mentioned.... the program makes a backup of anything it removes and the list of malware in a text file, but this log posted does not show anything that was malware removed....so it is probably a log made after the first run of ComboFix.... and it looks OK.

The settings for Notepad determine how the log appears, and this two post log is not the usual type, it is double spaced, while normally we see single spacing. Her Notepad>Word Wrap must be set wrong, it is nothing critical as it looks like all bad things were found and fixed by MalwareBytes....

Have her do an online scan, we usually have users post a log from Kaspersky online

if someone has time and wants to do an online scan, that would show us if anything is left...

Online antimalware scan directions

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure the following is checked.
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

The old System Restore Points should be removed and a new clean RP made but that can wait till after the online scan if one is going to be done.

Here's a page about why not to turn off System Restore before you are done removing malware. http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks.../17/66724.aspx

As long as a new Restore Point is made you don't have too much to worry about, but some people just leave Restore turned off, and then get into trouble and have no Points to return to....

So, if you want, post the online scanner log and I can check that.

Otherwise it looks good. I wouldn't worry about MusicMatch, nor BackWeb, they are very minor things.

Thanks for looking it over. I apologize for the formatting of the ComboFix log. I actually posted it from a Linux box (I created it on the Windows machine, obviously, transferred it to my home machine (Linux box), and posted it from there). So, maybe the double-spacing was the result of a CRLF -> CR conversion or something.

In any event, I didn't run ComboFix until you mentioned it. The date of the ComboFix log is 6/28. I ran MalwareBytes first and it found and removed the Personal AntiVirus infected files and registry keys. The dates of those logs are 6/24 and later.

When I have a chance, I'll have her run an online Kaspersky scan.

Getting back to the original question, when multiple "trusted" anti-virus apps disagree what's the best way to know which is correct?

Peace...

Hi,

When multiple scanners or programs find something malware, I tend to trust their detection but I do not let them Delete items if possible....

There have been several incidents of false positives lately- probably because the detections are getting increasingly complicated. There is no way for us to know, or decide, other than ultimately to trust or not trust. Don't let scanners simply delete things, usually they have settings that you can adjust to Quarantine items first....

You are aware of file submitting....that is a very good method to check with.

None of us can say, trust this or that program...they all are not perfect.

We try to not rely on just one scan, or just one tool to examine things, and that is the best we can do.
