Solved: Has my email address been stolen?
Hello -

In the last few days I've received 10 emails telling me that an email I suppostedly sent wasn't deliverable. I'm worried that I might be infected. The emails come from different service providers, but here's a typical message I've been getting:

"This is the Postfix program at host mail.wrecwireless.coop.

I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not
be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached below.

For further assistance, please send mail to <postmaster>

If you do so, please include this problem report. You can
delete your own text from the attached returned message.

The Postfix program

This has really got me worried. I did a virus scan (Avira) and ran AdAware and Spybot S&D and found a few things, but I'm still receiving failure notices as if I have been sending spam emails. I contacted Earthlink chat and they told me that it was just spam, but I'm worried that someone has hijacked my email address.

I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks.

Have you gotten any other messages that don't sound right?

No. Just a bunch of "failed" deliveries.

I contacted Earthlink again and got nowhere. They can only deal with the actual emails I'm receiving and they're from all over the place, since whoever stole my email address is using it to send spam. I'm still getting about 15 "delivery failuses" a day.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Do you recognize the receivers of your supposedly sent e-mail?

If you do then the message is a legitmate "failure to deliver".

If you do not recognize any of them, then I would suggest that it may be spam and you should not click on any link in the messsage, as this will identify your addy as a usable one.

It is possible that your e-mail addy was collected by a spammer and is using it to send spam. This is a huge problem created by people who forward e-mails without removing the addys in the body, and by those people who don't use BCC.

If the problem persists then you can change your addy to another one. You will need to keep the old one for a while to ensure that all your contacts have your new addy. Send an e-mail (using your new addy) to all your contacts advising them of your new e-mail addy, and ask for a confirmation reply.

I have an ISP account plus others in Hotmail, Yahoo, and Gmail. I use each one for differnet purposes. The ISP account is only for family and close friends who know how to use BCC and don't Forward junk e-mail.

The other acounts are for different purposes.

Thanks. I'm was afraid that that would be the solution. Drat. All these emails are spam about discount drugs. Guess I'll create a new address.

Just don't open any suspicious attachments.

You should also get a new e-mail account.

Is it also possible that his friend's computer is the problem and his new email can have the same problem as soon as he emails his friend?

True, but now I'm sure it's some idiot spammer. I keep getting undeliverable mail that I didn't send. I've got myself a new email address and i hope that solves this.

Thanks everyone for all the help.
