I have no idea how this problem started, but Internet Explorer opens multiple windows unexpectedly. It happened when I was going to check my e-mail. All of a sudden, a gross number of windows begin opening of the same web page over and over.

I was able to stop the windows from multiplying by either resetting or ending the Internet Explorer process in the Ctrl+Alt+Delete window.

I have scanned my computer with several anti-virus and spyware programs, including Spyware Doctor, Spybot and AVG. None of them picked out anything more serious than cookies.

I am currently using Firefox, which has shown no problems. I have not added or removed any programs that I think could cause this issue.

Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware?

Have you recently used a registry cleaner?

You've edited your HijackThis log in post #3, probably after a MBAM scan and disinfection.
There was a 020 entry with an infection, no longer showing. Why did you start a new thread in the Malware Removal forum with a link to this original thread, when you've taken out the reason I asked you to post in the Malware Removal forum in the first place?

Do you still have the issue, even though you've ran a scan with MBAM?

You should have listened to phantom010, especially the "Do not fix anything

Phantom010 knows what he's talking and now neither he nor the malware experts "may" not know what's cauing the IE6 problem!
Are you game for a total re-install?lol. Please look at the funny side of what i am posting., but it's a fact that phantom is an expert in identifying and fixing malware probs.

I also downloaded IE8, replacing the old IE6. Again, it might be awhile before I can figure out if I'm in the clear.

That's the only thing that was showing in your log but a HijackThis log doesn't always show everything. You may have other traces of malware that would need to be taken care of.
