Solved: Error setting up Avast
Ironically, when I tried the "Ask Tech Support Now" feature (up above) & tried the Submit Question button, that too, did not work.

I got a message:
"Error Setting up Avast"

Here's the Log clipboard:

Dear jelleym,
I Googled around and found this link http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6121_102...hreadID=282305.

The one problem area which always springs up is, if the previous Antivirus you had has not been completely erased, it will interfere with the new installation!

After some more Googling around, with reference to the last line in your log file"02.07.2009 19:36:29 general: POST result: 0x20000004, server response:", the ox20000004 means" "server down, that is server unreachable",. Hence the link i gave in the previous post becomes more relevent. I suggest you remove whatever were downloaded and start a fresh install from the website in the link. Let us see how the story unfolds!

PS: I am a real alien, but nobody believes! See my mug, have you ever seen a teenager with buttoned down collar, that too in Paris? We are known to control the thoughts of earthlings, but it's a choice and i chose not to, because all your thoughts are really messed up!

Thanks - I should explain further why I'm confused.

See, on the desktop I'm presently typing on, I already have Avast successfully installed (after having removed AVG - which I knew to remove).

My problem with Avast has been with my laptop which was acquired second-hand.
On the laptop's desktop-Icons, there's one Icon labelled Norton Antivirus 2004.

Norton is also listed among the ProgramFiles Folder.

However, Norton didn't seem to be operational - because whereas on my desktop both AVG & Avast always made/makes their presence known every day (either by AVG requiring clicking to download updates, or else with Avast slowing down the system until a voice announces that my virus database has been updated), yet on the other hand, on my laptop I haven't been sure these past years what the heck Norton has been doing. Whether it was just dormant - or actually active & protecting me.

That's why I went ahead with Avast without removing Norton from my laptop.
In fact, I'm not sure whether I should remove Norton 2004 - if it's actually active & not dormant. How the heck do I find out whether Norton has actually been protecting me until now (in which case maybe I should leave the status quo?

If the Norton icon is not there in the system tray, you can assume it's just not working. If you try to download updates for Norton 2004 and cannot, delete Norton,it's just using up the precious 256Gb ram. This link helps you to remove Norton 2004. :http://service1.symantec.com/Support...05033108162039

Now we surely know for a fact that Norton A-V was installed on the laptop and was preventing your installation of Avast. By the way,off-topic, If you read the BillP's blog site which i was allowed to post, you will understand how Norton too is struggling to sell.

There are people who run their computers without any Antivirus program! There are many more people in Asia who use the pirated version of both XP Professional and the techguy there hoodwinks them into installing an A-V which has no updates and coolly charges the gullible for it! It's akin to the cat drinking milk with eyes closed, blissful that no one's watching it. Avira Antivir/Avast are loads better than the Norton which you have on the laptop!Best wishes.

Thanks for the advice! (who knows what trojans etc. I've accumulated by now on the laptop)..

BTW, I just checked my Desktop's Startups (where I'm currently typing from) - and I assume that the following is the name for Avast's AV?
ashDisp.exe

When I mouseover my Avast Icon on bottom right of my Desktop, it states:
7 providers total; 4 running
(Network shield, P2P shield, Standard Shield, Web Shield)

I had disabled the other three, hoping that would speed up Avast. I believe at least one of the 3 was for Outlook Express which I don't use.

Anyway, next chance I get, I'll look up the Startups on my laptop, and then followup.

Dear jelleym,
Congrats for installing Avast! It rocks! Please don't forget the daily updates! Why not increase the Ram as it will do loads of good to the speed of the laptop. Reg.your question about ashdisp.exe ,it's related to Avast,so no worries there. Here's the link about it :http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/ashdisp/

Actually, I was talking about the Avast that's on my Desktop.

As for my laptop, I just checked the bottom right, and in fact there is the:
Norton antivirus autoprotect enabled Icon displayed there.

Does this mean I'm OK with Norton, and maybe I should just delete the Avast setup application from my download files on my laptop?

I'm really sorry about my not thinking straight - it's just I have alot of static in my life these past years which impacts on grey matter but since you're an Alien yoself, maybe you can relate

Dear jelleym,
Norton is working fine on your lap-T. Delete the install files and other related files of AVAST from the Lap-T.

Two A-Vs on one operating system is very bad and the conflict between the two can be very problematic!

So,let's be clear: Avast on your Desktop. Norton for your Laptop. Don't forget the daily updates!

Now, kindly give a sigh of relief and let me hear it! Best wishes!
PSistances don't matter for us!

OK, I deleted the setup app from my download files (btw, Avast was not listed among the Program Files on the laptop).

Thank you very much! Best regards to the outer galaxies & hope you don't run into any nauseating NASA types

Dear jelleym,
It was a pleasure conversing with you! Glad that i could be of some utility. The only difference between humans and aliens is "there is no thought structure there"! We live in the "active living present" which is impossible to convey and is beyond the comprehension of Homo Sapiens! Best wishes and i can assure you that everything will fall into an agreeable pattern for you in the future!
