Solved: Throwing out my old computer
I have an old Dell desktop that was infected with viruses and to which I no longer have the connections, and which I have been using as a plant stand.

I now want to get rid of it but am afraid to throw it out as-is.

I need to "clear" the hard drive but I cannot open it as it is bolted shut.

I am told to get a drill and drill holes in it but I do not have a heavy duty power-drill.

Any other options please before I throw it in the dumpster?

Thank you.

Hi,
Does it boot up at all (despite the foliage)? If so you could try 'boot'n'nuke:

Hard drives don't like shocks, so get a large (sledge) hammer, place the unit on a hard surface, and smack the outside of the case next to the HDD a few times.

Sláinte

P.S. This is very therapeutic too, especially if you work with computers!

It does not boot up, I've thrown out all its connections and wirings.

Unfortunately I do not have a hacksaw. I have a hammer but it is located inside a casing that is hard to attack with a hammer.

I guess I need to find a "BRUTE" to do this for me. Thank you for all the kind responses. I love you all and Happy 4th.

Dear nemoryer,
Blackmirror's list of how to burn a HD is too good! I would have suggested a better way,if not for the other excellent remedies offered above.

A very senior, big-hearted and respected member of this site is "hewee". He has ways to piece together computer junks together and make them usable and gives them away to kids/folks who need one. Since i know your apprehensions about your personal data getting out, i respect that. That's the reason why i suggested hewee, as he is the very last person to peep! Anyway, the waters have already flown under the bridge. I mourn the loss of your plant stand!

Impermanence is the rule in your planet!

Burning a hard drive
How wonderful to read your post. It put a huge smile on my face. Thank you.

I cannot put the PC together anyways cuz I threw out all the power cords and connections to it. It was infected very badly and I actually treated as though it were human and I didn't want to be near it. LOL.

I'll try to find a BURLY neighbor one of these days. I have hammer. Maybe he can hammer it to death. hehehehe.

Thank you for your wonderful post. It brought such joy to read it.
Happy 4th.
